I woke early this morning with a painful ear, thought i must have been sleeping on it funny, however as the days has gone on, my ear is red and swollen and the swelling and pain is travelling down my neck towards my jaw. :(

If it is still bad tomorrow, you need to see your doctor. It could be anything or nothing. Sometimes teeth problems can cause pain in the jaw up to the ear.

I will do, doubt me getting in to see him tomorrow, and I got the DESMOND thing tomorrow, so will carry on with the paracetamol and ibruprofen until i can see the doctor or the pharmacist.. Thankyou

glad you are seeing gp wednesday, but if things get worsde, please go before

Will try to ally, however getting an appointment with our doctors is a nightmare

its very hard at my surgery to get an appointment
what i tend to do is ring for a gp to ring back and if go feels i need to be seen, then hey presto theres always an appointment available

Be careful with ibuprofen.. That can cause more problems than it solves ... Did the ear problem start before you took the ibuprofen?

Hi Fiona,
I don't mean to scare you but if it is an inner ear infection, it will get much more painful before Wednesday if left untreated. My surgery is hard to get an appointment with as well, nearly impossible for same-day appointments. My husband had to call up and demand one for me the last time I got an ear infection. I literally wanted to cut off my own head, the pain was so intense (like there was an ice pick in my ear, going down the side of my face to my jawline). It started off exactly as you are describing; the pain wasn't inside my ear at first. Does it feel like your ear opening is closing up? Warm compresses and a topical antibiotic cream helped me last time until I could get the prescription filled.

Then again it could be an abscessed tooth. Neither can wait, in my experience.

Thankyou for the replies, my problem started overnight, no pain in the ear, but the ear is swollen, red and warm to touch, the pain is below the ear going towards the jaw. I hadn't taken any different meds up until earlier on today, after the problem started. I have skin problems, Psoriasis I think, other dr thought it was eczma, so always seem to suffer scaley skin in and around the ear (sorry for the description), but the skin isnt broken so unless it is an infection further down the ear/neck etc im stumped, the pain has settled somewhat, but there is pain when i touch the area affected. x

Could be a blocked Eustacian tube (spelling wrong but its the tube that connects the ear to the throat), decongestants if you don't mind more meds can help, as can breathing steam (hot not boiling water in a basin then a towel over your head to help contain the steam), particularly with a few drops of eucalyptus oil added. Both also help if its blocked synuses.

Hope you feel better soon.
