Symptoms with moderately high bs readings?

I'm on holiday in Spain at the moment and experienced some problems last night after eating a meal followed by a few glasses of sangria! I had a sudden rush come up my body and I went light headed and faint in a very short time. This has happened to me a couple of times over the past year and the symptoms appear to subside when I drink water. I checked my blood sugar levels while I was experiencing the symptoms and the monitor was showing 12.5 I took another reading in the middle of the night and it was showing 14.5. It was down to 8.8 at 9am this morning.

Is it possible that you could experience symptoms like this without having an overly high bs reading? I wasn't drunk, the sensation was a numbness that appeared to rush up my body and feeling faint to the extent I nearly passed out. My mouth went very dry and I felt very thirsty!

Perhaps a fast hit of sugar could cause this?

Thanks Brett. Made it back to the hotel yesterday, my bs was 8.6. I'm going to give the metformin a miss for a couple of days and be extra careful what I eat and drink for the rest of the holiday. Sat on a sun bed at the mo, feeling ok, will keep sipping the agua ..

Cheers

Hi Mikeee,
I get this quite frequently when I've eaten out or am on holiday & not able to stick to my normal eating routine. It usually starts with feeling really hot then waves of 'strangeness' pass over me in 20 minute intervals. This continues until my BS returns to below 8.

I've not taken metformin for 2 days now and haven't had any further symptoms. My bs was was 6.8 yesterday morning and 8.6 this morning. I've only just started to take the metformin and pretty sure that's what has made me I'll !! When I had my last review the nurse said that I was .5 of a percent over the recommended level, I wonder if really need any diabetic meds at all. I've started to adjust my diet and get more exercise and hopefully that will get me back on the straight and narrow!
