R2 on at home and Jeremy vine will be discussing diabetes this lunchtime. In particular, he's asking for T1s to phone in if they are annoyed at the lack of distinction there is between T1 and T2 in general.

Hi Riri, I have been out dog walking, so didn't know anything about it. Did you listen to the program? and did anyone phone in?
Because it's not a topic I have heard being discussed about? Could be interesting.

Hia RRB (thanks for well wishes on previous post). Yes did listen to it. Barbara Young was in the studio and a chap who had had T1 for 30 years. There were some callers from T1 diabetics and parents who were incensed at the lack of awareness around T1 and the general assumption by some that it's avoidable! One really sad caller who had lost their son in June from a night hypo. Nothing new really just some callers asking for more funding to find a cure and others explaining how complicated T1 is. Once caller incensed at young children drinking gallons of sugar fuelled drinks who are risking onset of T2. Barbara young explained that diet and lifestyle play a huge part in the development of T2 but some are more pre-disposed as well and/or have other problems which lead to T2. Reiterated that T1 not caused by diet etc.

Thanks for the reply Riri, pity I missed it, as there is not a lot of 'awareness of Type 1'( discussions) hopefully there will be more in the future. I wished I had been able to listen to it, it did sound interesting. Take care.

Usually listen to JV but missed the programme today :(

TBH I couldn't be bothered to get annoyed about diet causing type 1 diabetes, when you think about it we as type 1's only make up 10% of the people in the UK who are diabetic, besides there's no one single cause for type 2 diabetes and being overweight, genetics, ethnicity, age and taking medication like long term steroids can heightened a persons risk of developing the condition, better to ignore any comments or use the opportunity to educate the person who makes such a comment.

Still it's good that diabetes is being discussed on the radio as it may spur on people to go and get tested if they think they are presenting with the symptoms.
