Greeting everyone!
I am 27, Scottish, have had T1D for around 16 years now (eek)

I decided back in September that I was going to splash out and get myself a Freestyle Libre reader and a couple of sensors and see what all the hype was about. I have never looked back.
Yes it is quite expensive but in my opinion, it is without a doubt the best thing I have ever done for my Diabetes management and I feel that it's worth every penny!

Shortly after this I started cutting down on my carbohydrate intake over a month or two, and am now on a "very low carb" ketogenic diet. Again, I love it, I don't think I would go back to a normal carbohydrate filled diet... the benefits to my control, and just my overall feeling of healthiness have been amazing.

I have not always been the best diabetic, in my mid/late teens I spent more years that I'd like to admit in denial. I hated having cracked and bumpy fingers from testing and started avoiding it as much as possible. I took my injections but had no frame of reference for correcting highs.
I am now paying for this with pretty bad eyesight and occasional nerve pain, so it's basically just damage control from this point onward.

I I have issues with depression and lack of motivation, and quite often a difficult Diabetes day will have me wondering why I bother (or maybe shouting abuse at my glucose monitor for not telling me what I'm expecting to hear :P)
But taking control and making these changes helps me in my dark moments, I have given myself a "mission" to avoid carbs, which keeps me going.

I am always happy to share my experiences if anyone wants to know more about any of the above, and keep an eye out for me lurking on the Ketogenic Diet threads!

Stay strong Diabuddies x

Hi there and well done on taking steps to improve your control.

Whilst I have no idea about the nature or extent of your eye problems, I will say a number of people report their retinopathy healing itself when they've been keeping the carbs low. Of course, it doesn't happen for everyone, or LC would be the first line of treatment for it.

Good luck with it all.

Hello @pixikim Good to hear from you and your experiences with the libre, I tend to wear it when I know I need to make adjustments to confirm patterns, and think it’s a great device to use. Are you having eye screening tests to check your eyes ? Dr Bernstein managed to reverse most of his nerve issues and so it does prove that tighter control will help so stay positive as you are doing a great job turning this around :)
