when you eat just protein and fat, say boiled egg , chicken , salmon etc with mayo, a few onion bits and eat it with celery or a lettuce wrap when do you inject? Or is it better to add a few more veggies to bridge the gap for insulin until the protein gets there ? I think my insulin starts coming in around 5 minutes. I always seem to go low 1st if I take insulin 5 min before eating but if I take it right when I eat I go high. I have been fiddling with timing but sometimes I think getting the macros in the right proportions makes more of a difference. I envy T2 s now that can just have a snack size meal. I only take 1/2 unit with this kind of meal but it still leaves me feeling 'off'.

I generally stay between 75 and 100 and inject 1/2 unit for meals but even within that range I feel fluctuations. Most annoying....

On MDI I would have to split-dose for meals like a cheese omelette/bacon & eggs, injecting half just before eating and the rest 2 hours after finishing the meal to avoid a delayed bg spike.

Even with just one egg and a T mayo? That stinks.
I should mention when I say low and high I mean still staying within the 75-100 range. I can feel going low even if it's only 5 points. Ok this is sounding stupid now. I guess I just have to learn to deal with not feeling well. It just gets old feeling wonky

No not with one egg :)

If I have a omelette as a main meal it contains 4 eggs, usual bolus is 4 units so it equates to 1u per egg, what is surprising though I can eat a meal containing 40g of carbs and bolus the same amount of insulin.

I'd probably get away with injecting about 2 hours later if it was only that. A bigger meal and I'd need to split bolus like @noblehead

Sometimes I think protein is just a wild card when you add it to other foods like carbs. Everything comes in at different times and it's hard to get that timing right. Just carbs come in very fast but add protein and it slows it slightly but add fat and you never know what you'll get. And as the day goes on all that changes. I have to eat a very small BF like half an avocado with celery. Then I might go a little lower but then at 2 or 3 hours I can be a bunch higher. BF always stinks for me. I never feel good after I eat until about noon no matter what it is. I tolerate very few carbs other than a piece of lettuce or celery and very little protein as well. Needs to be higher fat and that doesn't always work either. One would think we shouldn't even feel 1/2 unit especially with food. I feel better taking 1/2 unit as a correction than taking it with food. Hard to explain that ....

Unless it's a large amount of protein I don't count it into the bolus calculation when eaten with carbs.

I never eat large portions and bolus mostly for protein and fat. A piece of lettuce some celery and a radish are my main veggies. Lol. I do love them though. Then I have an ounce or two of protein with mayo and either 1/2 or whole avocado a day. A few nuts as snacks if needed.
I eat small meals because I don't digest well.
Thanks
