Hi, I would like to thank everyone for the advice on hot & cold drinks. I have another question for anyone who can help me again? I like training by this I mean going up to a gym! Due to an injury I've not been able to go. When I'm training Carbohydrates are important and I can normally rely on burning it off to stop the sugar build up. Question! What is the maximum intake of carbs I can have while not training & what type of foods should I be looking at. Sorry for the long windedness

Regards

Peter

You DON'T need carbs whilst training.
I go to the gym or go hiking up to 5 times a week and don't eat any carbs before I go. the rest of the time I try to stay below 50 carbs per day.( i usually succeed.
The maximum carb intake for you is "That which doesn't put your BG above your personal target"

I used to think carbs were necessary for energy, particularly for tennis. I go to the gym twice a week with my wife who is in a heart rehab group.

After 8 years of the NHS/DUK starchy carb diet, muscle pains threatened to end my active life. Cutting down on carbs restored my activity.

I can play tennis for 2 hours without bananas or energy drinks. I just drink water. My BG readings are stable during that time at 5.5 - 6.5.

Why do you think you needs carbs? Are you into extreme sports that are very demanding on your body? In that case you need proper advice - but watch your BG levels. Your long-term health could be prejudiced.

The maxium amount of carbs one can have, is dependant on how they impact on the blood glucose levels...

Contray to what Hanna and IanD are saying you can have your carbs if you want them, but what you need to do is test to ensure what your are eating isn't causing your blood glucose to shoot up to unseptable levels...

If you know that you can eat lets says a meal/snack consisting 30-40g of carbs before you go training, and you find that your BG is fine and stable, if you don't train and burn this off, you might find that you have to decrease the amount of carbs to a lower level..

Testing is the only way to find out what is suitable for you..

Hi Peter,
Correct me if I am wrong but your question seems to be about how many carbs you can eat whilst not going to the gym.
On a daily basis you have to find the right carb amount for you as we all differ. Most people have to either eat smaller portions of bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, cereals and some root vegetables and some fruits. Some have chosen to eliminate them altogether but it is a very individual thing and nobody can manage this for you. The only way you will find the amount that is right for you is to test everything and keep a food diary so that you know what the carbs are doing to your levels. This means testing before and 2hrs. after a meal. Ideally these figures should be quite close together.

Catherine.
