I was on SR Metformin for a long time, it did not agree with me. I take Glicazide one twice a day, inject exenatide twice a day (sorry for spelling of medication) and insulin twice a day. I feel I am self medicating and need help so after a long wait have an appointment with a diabetic specialist clinic this Monday after I phoned for help. I was started off with 6 units of insulin, I am now on 30 units in the morning and 12 before bedtime. My readings vary and I have also cut down on carbs

I have been diabetic for approximately 7 years. Was first controlled by diet alone then metformin which has gradually increased and last year sitagliptin was added. I too have had the problem with diarrhoea and urgency and felt I could not go anywhere too far from a loo. I did not for one moment think about the diarrhoea being connected with my medication (I can't think why it seems so obvious now!) My GP also did not make the connection and sent me for a colonoscopy which was clear. I think it is important to ensure there is nothing else happening to cause the diarrhoea and I was reassured by the colonoscopy results. I have just completed 1 week on the low carb diet - cutting out potatoes, pasta and bread. There has been a huge improvement and my bowels have, for the moment, returned to more or less normal. Hurray!

I have only very recently started using this forum/site and must thank you all for increasing my knowledge about diabetes. I think I have been in denial since diagnosis but am determined to improve my health now (hopefully better late than never). I have read that many of you have been advised by GPs/diabetic nurses not to test at home and this was the case for me. I now want to start testing at home and wonder if any of you can advise a good testing kit to purchase - one that is simple and straight forward.

Any other tips or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi , I had these problems, been diabetic for 8 years type 2. Had a lot of problems with st metaformin, ended up with surgery after a colonoscopy. I had been asking GP foe 3 years if the bowel problems and discomfort was the diabetic meds, he of corse told me no. The gas to consultant on the other hand said it was, and it's to do wit the fillers in them, I am on Glucophage Slr and much better, had to have a different brand one time and problems re occurred. So OP , please go to your GP and ask for a referral. I did, and am glad. Good luck.
