What type of diabetes do you have, and are you on any medication? And if so, what medication?
A blood glucose of 4.7 is great on diet only, or on metformin.
But if you are on medications like insulin or gliclazide it might be a bit on the low side.

No medications,Diet only dr only said check bloods again in 3 months time, so i took it to get a diet change done some research, in the 5weeks since spoke to gp, always been in the 10-13, in this 5 weeks i`v lost over 5 stone a lot more to lose, 1st time checking b/s this week i am hoping i can change enough before next bloods taken that i will show can be diet controlled or no diabetic if that is even possible

It sounds as though you are well on the way to lowering your levels. An hba1c measures the last 3 months of levels so there is not much point in doing it more frequently then every three months.
Congratulations on your excellent progress and welcome to the forums.

DR phoned today and reassured me this was her reply, and underactive thyroid is also in a better level also, Typically we are looking for blood sugars above 4, but we only tend to be concerned with too low blood sugars when someone is on diabetic medication that risks causing too low a blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) . If we prescribe these meds then we usually give someone a blood glucose monitor to be able to check there readings. The first line diabetic tablet we tend to use if needed though is metformin which unlocks the bodies resistance to insulin and gets rid of sugar in the blood stream and this tablet does not tend to cause too low a blood sugar hence no need for home blood glucose monitoring. In someone like yourself that is trying to control the diabetes with diet then a reading of 4.7 is ok. When analysing a blood glucose it is helpful to know if was before a meal like before breakfast as they will shoot up after eating and less helpful to interpet. I see you have a phone review with Alison our diabetic nurse on 22/8 at 10.20 so she will be able to share more info then.

Hello Win71, Welcome to the forum.

I was also told I didn't need to check my blood reading daily either, but took the advise of many here and bought a blood glucose monitor and some test strips. That way you can see what foods spike you, I and many others test upon waking (fasting reading), before meals and 2 hours after meals, then hopefully the numbers will not be more that 2 higher. eg if 5 before a meal then 2 hours later no more than 7.

Look forward to reading more of your posts :)
