Taking a Bao

Gday everyone. My wife introduced me to this site earlier today, bless her, she's always looking out for things like this for me :)

I'm a type 1 diabetic, diagnosed when I was 12 through convenient symptoms like dying. A bit dramatic but I always did like attention lol. Since I was 13 or 14 my sugars have been largely uncontrolled. I'll be 26 this year. About three years ago I was put on humalog and lantus, and about a year ago I was told how it worked. Since then my sugars have got a fair bit better. I've not had the best support in my time, but then through various problems at school, then with depression, I've not been the easiest patient to get through to. Only now with evidence of neuropathy and problems arising in my left eye and most importantly talking about having a little one with the lady am I starting to take things more seriously. Recently my sugars have been a lot better.

To keep things somewhat in check and keep myself exercising regularly I do martial arts. I also read and play video games when I'm not watching Top Gear and Monkey. I live in sunny South Wales with two dogs and the love of my life :)

I'm a miserable antisocial kind of bloke, but will be popping in to see what's what and hopefully get some laughs and see if I can make a few friends while I'm around.

Banzai!

Hi TigerBao and welcome to the forum :) Baos back. :) I'm sure you will find plenty of friends on here and perhaps with similar interests if you're lucky. (I'm a Top Gear fan) I see that, although you have been diagnosed since you were 12, that you have had troubles with control. This is some basic advice written by the Forum Monitors that they give to new members. It says "newly diagnosed" which I know you are not, but you could find something in here that helps you to improve your management of your diabetes - the information on diet for example. Have a read. Then ask as many questions as you like.

Ta very much. My main issues with control stem largely from not knowing how insulin works, which was only explained to me last year. I'm hoping to go on a DAFNE course this year to polish up a little more. My main issue these days is working out how much insulin I need when I eat stuff like chips or mashed potato. I'm doing a lot better, but I'm here to learn, so plan to go through everywhere, thanks for the link. Have an hour or two before I have to leave to pretend I have a social life so will skip over and have a gander :)

Hi,

DAFNE will help you immensly! it teaches you to match your insulin to what you eat instead of the other way around.

It enables you to so much flexibility and control your BG's alot better too :)

It also explains how insulin works and goes right into the basics, it also covers sickness, alcohol exercise, hypos and much more.

Theres loads of posts around that are good for reading and if you have any questions feel free to ask, no question is stupid or silly and people are always happy to help :)

Oh I'm sure I'll think up a couple :D

Saw a dietician a while ago who leads a DAFNE, and she went through the basics with me and in an hour I learned more than in ten years of "inject this much a day. Hm that's not working, inject a bit more." Amazing what difference it makes when you actually know why you're injecting that much and how much you need. Been meaning to email her actually, now's as good a time as any I guess :)

It's amazing what it teaches you i think!

It's a shame so many people wait so long to do DAFNE or similar courses.

I moaned and moaned at my nurse to ask me first if anyone was to drop out if i could take their place, it worked because i got in last april instead of june :)

Sad thing is I was invited to two or three, but at the time the phone call came through I was suicidal so told them to give it to someone who wanted to live long enough to make use of the knowledge. Dunno if that was the right thing, as a big part of my depression is related to my poor diabetes management. Will hopefully make it to one this year, even if I have to sit outside the window taking notes for myself lol

In case there's nothing available this year is there any chance someone here is from Wales who I could read their notes or whatever they give out to you?
