I was diagnosed Type 1 about 8 weeks ago..I have been taking it very easy, but in the future when i go out etc...I'm wondering what the deal is with taking your insulin pen, with needles etc and your BG testing kit into a bar where the bouncers search your bags before entry etc?
Is it ever a problem? Do door staff ever get funny about you having these things? I mean, of course we need to carry them!.. so i'm curious.

Can't say it's ever been an issue. Most of the time, at least in my experience, as soon as you mention medical and diabetes, they tend to stop looking and run away.

I did have a problem once, but I think that was because the bouncers had singled me out to stop. Even then, I just said I had diabetes and showed them my MedicAlert bracelet. I didn't go into too much detail about what was in my bag.

But that was the only time that I've ever had problems, so I think it's unusual.

Never a problem for me they don't even bat an eye lid because one they think it's a pen or a purse :) I wouldn't worry but if they ask just say you're diabetic! x

I attend an archive where pens (the sort you write with) are not allowed. I pass through the security checkpoints several times during the day. The security staff are are on a rota. Some of the staff know me and let me pass through. Others who don't know me think that they have hit the jackpot when they see my insulin pen. They pick it up and usually say, "Wozzat? You're not allowed pens in 'ere." While they try to decypher the labels I tell them it is my medication. The word 'medication' is usually enough to be allowed to pass through the checkpoint with the pen.

If mentioning medication or showing them your medic alert bracelet is not enough, you could carry a doctor's letter... that's what is recommended for airport security (where they can be more concerned about what we carry).

Its a good idea to mention the fact that you are a Diabetic and have your're 'kit' with you before getting searched.

I worked as a doorman briefly a number of years ago. When I was going through the SIA training (to become licensed), the course trainer mentioned that doorstaff should be vigilant to avoid being pricked by a needle when searching individuals/bags. He specifically mentioned diabetics too. So it is in the 'doormans curriculum', so to speak.
