Hi,
I am Type 1 ( 63 years) duration) with recently diagnosed Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
My Gp advised taking Tamsulosin, an Alpha Blocker to control the frequency I needed to go for a wee.
It gave me Hyperglycaemia with insulin resistance which was very difficult to manage. I manage my Type 1 effectively with a Hb1Ac of 35. I persevered for another two days but then had to stop taking the Tamsulosin and my blood sugars returned to normal immediately. I then switched to Cialis 5mg/day and that has helped control my weeing a lot with no side effects.
Has anyone else had a similar experience with Tamsulosin?

Been on it for 3 years now - no problems. It is one of those meds required to be stopped before having certain surgical procedures.

I believe Cialis is also known by the tradename tadalafil a.k.a Viagra. Good switch IMO except that Viagra-type medications are normally not advised for diabetics with BP issues.

Cialis is described as having the effect of reducing IR in diabetics, but tests have also shown no effect on HbA1c.

I did find this mention against Tamsulosin
"The Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb has received three reports of tamsulosin associated with an increase in blood glucose. All patients were diabetics, and this association might be related to patients in whom insulin-dependent glucose uptake is limited."

Seems to be a rare side effect possibly linked to insulin users.
