Hi everyone. I had a tat done since I was diagnosed and had no problems with it. On saturday I planning on having another one, this time on my foot. With all the fuss about type 1's and feet I was wondering if it is ok to have a tattoo there? Any advice would be appreciated :D

I don't see why not. If your first tattoo was ok I can't see it being any different because it's on your foot. I've had all my tattoos done since being diabetic with no problems and I intend on having one on my foot when the weather is better as I will need to wear flip flops!

Having just listened to the interview on the file on four program, with the guy who got a splinter in his foot that got infected and gangrenous all in the course of a weekend, well.. I've decided to take very very good care of my feet.

The last tattoo I has was last April and I think they were pretty ok. The other tattoos I've had were several years earlier so I don't what my bloods were like then. But to be honest I'd have 1 done whatever my bloods were.

I was advised to stop having them after Diagnosis due to the increased risks of infection. At a push i could finish what i started but was told to be extra vigilant during healing.

Lisa. I was diagnosed age 7 so had no tattoos at the time. I've now got three - one of my back, one on my wrist, and one on the top of my foot. I've had no problems with any of them. They took a little longer to heal than 'normal' (sorry to use that term) people, but not much longer. The one on my foot is the most recent - about three months ago actually. I was a little worried about healing. The tattoo place asked if I was diabetic and I confirmed that I was. Seeing I had other tattoos they were happy to go ahead. I've never had any problems with my feet so went ahead - you only live once eh?!

One thing I will say - it HURTS! By far the most panful tattoo I have had done. I hope you are braver than me lol.

Good lick with it :)

Do you think if you hadn't had your other tattoos they wouldn't have done it as you said you were diabetic? Ive never said on the forms you fill in at the tattooists that I'm diabetic just in case they say they won't do it! I've never noticed any difference in healing time either.

Hi Sarah,

I think they would have done. They asked if my diabetes was well controlled and I said yes. I also had to say I hadn't had any alcohol in the last 24 hours - I needed some Dutch courage before I went in so that was a bit of a lie! I did ask my diabetes team before I got my first one and they had no issues with it. Besides, my first tattoo is on my lower back and is my largest (still pretty small as I'm a bit of a wimp!). I declared my diabetes then and they were still ok with it :)

Probably too late now Lisa but I wouldn't be getting any tattoo on my feet, hope it all went well if you went ahead and hope you don't end up with any infections :)

I have always made sure when I've had mine done that I've taken a bottle of coke to sip whilst having it done so my sugars don't drop although there is no reason they should. Mine all healed properly and I've had no issues at all with them, except trying not to pick at them when they are itchy! I hope all goes well with your tattoo and to anyone else that has any done.

I'm friends with a girl who has several tattoo's (i only have 1, but planning another in about a month or 2's time), anyway she's not diabetic but said the foot one hurt most anyway simply coz there's no flesh there,
