Tattoos

Sorry to hear of the bad experience, but on the bright side you have the sense to work out a solution that also satisfies your curiosity of tattoos. Who knows maybe you'll then think of a more decorative one for future. I have a big important day on thursday but hope that I can check in some time to catch up how it went. I was recommended Bepanthen (nappy rash cream) for treatment afterwards, and mine has healed nicely.

Hi all.
'yes' animal insulins are good with hypo awareness and I certainly did feel it, it ends up leaving me feeling
wiped out the next day afterwards tho ...
Gappy what is happening with you on thursday? Will think of you then
I have been told to use 'bepanthen' cream too , so ordered a small 30g tube on friday at my local chemists .
Pick it up tomorrow.
Have drawn my 'own' small pretty dainty design and left it with tattooist to do transfer of it.
This way its personal and unique to myself.
It will be just the word 'Diabetic' on inner left wrist, then I can wear my bracelet on my right wrist.
Havent included my type as on the 18th june I am being C Peptide tested, for autoimmune diabetes in adults.
Was dismayed public didnt help or even know what to do when I was hypo, made me realise just 'what tattoo'
was needed!

Being your own design makes it very personal-wish I was artistic like that!

I think that's an excellent idea to get the word,"Diabetic" tattooed! I have Liverpool on my wrist, but I don't go waving it around when I'm in Manchester!

Hi all.
Must contess it took me loads of attempts and I used half a note pad up till I got it right !
My tattooist laughed when I told him I was 'sick' of writing it out, hope that I 'dont' get sick of the sight of it
as will have it for the rest of my life :lolno:
No skonk I cant see them appreciateing your liverpool tat in manchester on footy day especially.
Anna.

Sounds like it is going to be really special and beautiful. I'd love to see a picture of it when it's done and settled down. I'm not going to steal your idea as I dont need one.

Hi Daisy,Will need my son in law to teach me how to load a picture onto this forum
Am no computer wizard unfortunately...
Have decided to have two teeny tweeny open [not filled in] hearts above the two [i's] in the word Diabetic .
This should make it more personal dainty n girly looking. I hope? :P
The lettering must be very fine script written - plus ruler straight in lined n edged wording. Neither do I want
loopy curly writing , plus the b and the t must be the same height also when written. Capital 'D' too.
My tattooist has his 'orders' with my design !
Am fussy when it comes to something like this that will be on me for the rest of my life.
Have been doodling away again, make sure I got it 'right'
Anna.

Good luck, I hope to be able to check in and see how things went for you

Hi all...
Well I 'did it' got my small cute personal tattoo ! :P
Am sooo proud of it as its my own design and script written "Diabetic" with teeny tiny hearts above the [i's]
Cant stop looking at it, proud as punch :D
Ryan my tattooist really looked after me , I talked it all through with him prior to having it done,
he did the [i's] first to let me get used to the feeling of it, using an ultra finest smallest needle.
All his stuff is totally sterile and disposed of after EACH client.
I couldnt believe the size of the sharps bin he had, it was mega huge!
Had me thinking if I had one that huge - it would take me over 5 years to even half fill it up !!!!
The tattoo process was like a burning sunburn pain at times, but as my tattoo was so small n dainty
it only took 20mins to complete. We even had a little break whilst he checked I was okay.
Was given full aftercare advice, plus asked to pop in next week and let him check it too.
The after tattoo sensation is like 'prickly heat' am using the bepanthem cream advised to aid healing
n prevent any infection.
Its the 'only one' I will ever have so today was a big step for me.
Just got to let my parents know next!!! Dont think they will be too happy with me doing it!!!! :|
My hubby likes it a lot though thankgoodness :P
Oh ryan took pictures of it to add to his buisness website to include medical awareness tattoos as
I was his 1st ever customer having one done.
After having my tattoo done , went with hubby looking for a new washing machine [mines on its last legs!]

Congratulations, glad all went well. If he's stereotypical of the artists Ryan is probably covered in tattoo's himself, my artist (Steve) was, but he was equally as friendly as Ryan sounds, so proves a point of not judging people just coz they have tattoos. You're getting a washing machine, I wonder if I get another tattoo done, can I get a new car?

Hi all.
Yes it all went well thanks gappy, yep ryan is covered in tattoo's a mega huge koi carp on
his arm, with a smiling frog too ! Plus numerous other ones I cant remember as there are
that many of them...
They say 'never' use a tattooist who isnt tattooed themselves.
Saw the 'right' tattooist , as he did look after me so well, have to pop back next week
let him check all is well and okay.
Have told my mum this morning, who is breaking the news to my father!!!
She see's it as a sensible thing to have done as an awareness word .
As I did loose confidence in going out on my own after the bad hypo in middle of morrisons.
 Hubby is glad I am ready to replace the washing machine as with wearing a hearing aid
I switch it off when putting the NOISY machine on, and he then gets deafened with the racket it makes!!!
There are advantages to wearing an hearing aid .... :P :P :P

Hi there,

I have had type 2 Diabetes for 33 years ! that makes me feel old !, and have had 11 tattoos and each time I would say that as being Diabetic they do take a bit longer to heal than Joe Average, but I have only had one infection caused by wearing boots on a newly tattooed foot, but that still healed to show an excellent tattoo. I have never had any other problems with them they just need to be treated correctly by yourself, like using Bepanthenol cream till they scab up and let dry up, then cream them occasionally when the scab starts coming off. Hope this helps all.

Hi All,

Just to add that I have also had "Diabetic" tattooed on my forearm due to the fact that over the years, I have got fed up with the numerous bracelets, SOS chains that are so heavy and get in the way. On going to the hospital last week for some blood tests, the man that took the blood said that he wished that he could take a picture of it and put it on his facebook to show all his friends what a great idea it is !.

I'm Type 1, have been for about 25 years

I had a full back tattoo a couple of years ago, some 40 + hours in total

Never had any problems, but make sure its a reputable place. It was recommended to have mine wrapped in cling film. and change it daily for the first few days to help reduce the chance of infection

I thought about a Diabetic tattoo , but i'm now on a kidney / Pancreas transplant list i don't think i'll be needing one.

l am a type 1 diabetic (female)and have been for 40 years. Am now 54 and thought its about time l joined the tattoo set. In the last year
l have had 3, and have absolutely no problems. If anything my body heals quicker than a normal person. Providing you list to the
tattooist and do the proper aftercare procedures then all should be well. My best advice would be to put Savlon on about 6 times
a day for the first week, then 3 times a day after for the next week, then apply moisturiser daily from then on. If the skin is starting to grow over the tattoo(over healing) then use a facial exfoliator to gently sluff it off, but be careful not to over use, otherwise will get sore. My last tattoo was an absolute work of art and the tattooist(female) was very good.Do your homework, took me 2 years to decide to have it done and now very glad l did. :)

Ive had type 1 diabities for 28 years, I currently have 7 tattoo's and am planning my next. I've never had a problem. If you run your blood sugar a little higher than usual before getting the tattoo and take some fruit juice or can of coke with you for during the tattoo, just in case you feel faint/low you should be fine. I've had no problems whatsoever with healing/infections etc. My last tattoo was a medical Diabeties Type 1 tattoo, which thankfully i haven't needed to use yet, but its always going to be there just in case.

If your diabeties is well controlled there shouldn't be a problem.

I have a few tattoos one on each arm, on my neck and shoulder and plan on getting more including a medical alert one so i no longer have to wear bracelets etc.

i have had all of mine done while being extremely uncontrolled and have no problems, but now i am more in control i will probably notice i heal faster.

Tattoos are adictive im sure there will be loads more to come for me :D

Hi,

All I can say is visit your chosen tattooist, look for feedback etc on internet, twitter, facebook etc. Ensure they use their needles from sterile packs, they wear gloves and that they dont take vaseline from the jar it has been placed with a patula of some type in to a seperate bowl, and make sure they are happy doing your design. My tattooist does freehand, she doesn't use transfer/images available on the usual poster set ups in most tattooist. I have a tattoo on both sides of my chest, one on my side, one on my back, a half sleeve on one arm and one on my other arm, I give her an idea, we then discuss it further when she has come up with some drawings putting her slant on things, fine tune it, then she draws it on me and away we go!!! Be aware of delicate area's, parts of my side have been pretty hard!

Can I just add that using savlon is not better than using bepanthum. Savlon promotes promotes heavy scabbing and actually has a bleaching effect. It's not bad, but it does dry the skin out. It works for some people, others it doesn't. a good few years back now, the emulsifier was changed in savlon. this being the carrying agent. Once this was done, the amount of people that could use it before can't now. I think it used to be 1 out for a hundred couldnt use it, now i believe it is closer to 1 in 10 cant use it. People thinki because it's an antiseptic cream, it's ideal. You need to be using bepanthum, and using a very small amount, rubbed into the tattoo. This will keep the tattoo moisturised and keep the scabbing to a very bare minimum. The difference in my tattoos once I changed over to bepanthum is amazing.

Applejack, savlon worked for you and your methods, so that's ok for you, but you can't give advice out like that. You can't just put any old moisturiser on your tattoo, and the idea of an exfoliating scrub is insane! You wouldn't rub that into an open wound, would you? Sorry if I sound harsh, but that is bad advice to be giving people, and no decent tattoo artist would give that aftercare info out. Applying savlon 6 times a day is totally unnecessary. Bepanthum applied sparingly 2-3 times a day is all you need to do. This will keep the tattoo moisurised better than any cream, and the slight scab that appears is actually a layer of skin protecting the tattoo, so if you use a scrub to get rid of it, your tattoo will be affected.

For what may work perfectly for you may be wrong for another. Especially with us being diabetic, you need the correct advice. If you ask any tattooist if applying savlon 6 times a day, then moisturiser a few weeks later, then exfoliating scrub is ok, they will send you out of the shop and not tattoo you. If they say yes, that's fine, then you need to see a new tattooist.

Lezzles, I noticed my tattoos done in red ink now get a bit infected if I don't have good control over by blood sugar, whereas the reds I already have a re perfect when i wasn't diabetic! I think you should consider a tattoo of a box with"Take blood here" pointing to it, like I was going to get over my vein in my arm, but got a cherry blossom tattooed in the place before we remembered we was going to do it!
