Hello forum

I am new to diabetes & am slowly getting my head around it.
Recently I have been ill so my BG have been a little high & I am a little worried.
I use Accu Chek & have an Abbott meter as a back up but neither can test for ketones.
My doctor does not like it that I have 2 sets of diabetic supplies so asking for another meter with supplies will be trouble.
But it is my health & I will explain (should I have to do this) this meter tests for ketones.

I would like any recommendations or peoples experiences for Ketone testing meters.
I am new to forums so please go easy if I have made a posting mistake.

Kind regards
Lee

Hello lee .
Welcome to the forum too

Your post is fine 'perfectly fine' - no mistake at all :)

Meters can be a personal thing with some of us .
I love my little aviva nano meter , so am happy to use the keytone testing strips
that you use with urine .
I test with these , when over 11 on a blood testing result [my DSN instructions]
I am happy to keep things seperate but this 'is' just me .

There is a ketone/blood glucose combined test meter Freestyle Optium by Abbott .
Those on insulin 'only' - can request these .

When you are newly diagnosed there 'is' a lot to get your head around I understand .
It can take a bit for it all to sink in and make sense too :)
Best to take things step at a time and learn one new thing at a time .
This way you wont feel overwhelmed

Hope this can help you lee.
Any other questions just ask , we are here to help and support .

Anna.

Hi, I use an Optium Freestyle meter which tells you when to check for ketones depending on your sugar levels. I find it great cos it means I can start getting the ketones flushed out before it was
obvious that they are building up. This was supplied by my GP surgery and is a lit more convenient than urine tests.

Ive been diabetic for 4 years now, and can say I've never tested for ketones. I don't even get Ketostix on my repeat prescriptions list anymore!

Is it important?...

As a type 1 you should have ketone testing strips on your prescription, take a read of the following John for an explanation why:

I will do some research on the meters suggested & whether urine strips or blood strips are right for me.

John506 I know I am a new diabetic but from what I've learnt you should be testing for ketones if you are high.
As Morganator said if you test and ketones are present you can stop them building up.

Thank you for the advice everyone
