Type 2 Testing is terrifying! What am I doing wrong?

I have just started the T2 testing programme and the results are terrifying. I am regularly getting results of 9s and 10s first thing in the morning and then only drop to the 7s after eating.

My last Hb1ac was 6.8 and I was told not to worry but try to reduce back down to the previous 6.1 the year before. That s why I started the testing programme. I have been avoiding bread, pasta, rice and potatoes for the last three weeks and have bought a Fitbit which is encouraging me to do more exercise. I have also lost 6lbs. I thought I was on the right path but testing my blood has made me very despondent.

Can anyone please put my mind at rest?? (I have tested with control solution which is at high end of range but still within the limits).

Thanks.

None. I am managing by diet and exercise and trying hard to stay off meds as long as I can really.

What does your diet look like? You say you've been avoiding bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, but there are carbs in other places... Milk for example...!

I have been quite strict but do have semi skimmed milk in my tea and do eat the odd apple. I seem to be having worse readings despite being careful with diet and increasing exercise.

I like to think I am a "half full" person but for some reason I am feeling very down about these high readings.

Can you give us a typical day's diet then we might be able to spot the culprits.

Although it sounds stringent, it's worth checking the carbs in everything you eat. This includes root vegetables, any sauces, including tomatoes, etc. You may well find that you are eating far more than you realise.

Start off by doing a full count and breakdown, then it's worth using your meter around food to see what affects your blood glucose and when.

It may well also be that you are eating protein late in the evening and that is being converted into glucose overnight pushing your glucose levels up.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong your higher BG levels in the morning is probably down to what is called the dawn phenomenon or glucose dump. After fasting for some hours the body thinks it is being starved so dumps some glucose a lot of people have this you may find it comes down when you have been on the LC diet a bit longer. You could try eating something like a hard boiled egg, a piece of cheese, a Baby Bel or some peanut butter before you go to bed some people find that helps but it does not always work

Thanks for all your advice. I am now going to religiously enter all I eat into Myfitness pal as that shows how many carbs are in what I eat. And I am aiming for no more than 100gr per day. Fingers crossed .....
