Type of diabetes
LADA
I have been back and forth to my doctors since the start of the year, with feeling sick blurry vision etc, as i have grave's disease my blood was done, and the thyroid for once came back as stable, however i had a 8.6 reading for my bood sugars, doctor said she thought i was diabetic, however more blood tests done, 7.4 and the Hbc test Came back normal, doctor now says Pre diabetic. In the meantime i am still feeling rubbish, getting worse by the day, so i went back to doctors and insisted on a glucose test, basically she said it was a waste of time, however i got the test, 10.1 first test 14.6 after the test, doctors again saying i am diabetic, she now believes the reason the A1 test came back so low was because the diabetes probably started in December when i first taken ill she is now sending me to a specialist to test me for LADA. My question is as i have grave's disease, antibodies will show up in my blood cells anyway, would this give a false reading for being LADA.

Hi Sharron, I am not an expert on anything like this and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but the antibodies that would suggest diabetes are specific to the cells they destroy (beta cells or islets, GAD or ICA) and so, because the antibodies in Graves' disease specifically affects the thyroid gland and not the insulin producing cells the doctors should be able to distinguish between the two different antibodies and therefore between the two diseases? I have read though that thyroid problems can be linked to diabetes hence why I was worried about my son who was born with congenital hypothyroidism after I had gestational diabetes when pregnant.
