Hi Folks

Well I am now about 4 months in, I have been following a fairly low carb WOE and have lost approx 24lb (fluctuates). Just preparing to leave Kalkan,Turkey where we have been on holiday for the last 10 days so don't know where my weight is sitting at the moment. I haven't been really good but neither have I been really bad. For the most part lunch has been a cheese and ham baguette with crisps and on several occasions just eggs and two times scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast. Tiny slices probably smaller than a weight watchers or Nimble loaf.

When eating these I have been testing but they have usually been accompanied by 2 or 3 large glasses of diet coke and vodka so my numbers have been fine. Does alcohol actually help combat the rise in sugar from the bread?

Dinner has mainly been Fillet steak and chips (v small portions served here), couple of times I have had chicken. Most have bee accompanied by a roquefort cheese sauce. A few vegetables depending on the restaurant (carrots, broccoli, onions, peppers, cauliflower). Small bread rolls with balsamic and olive oil a couple of times, balloon bread smothered in butter a couple of times. I have had a total of 4 desserts, fried ice cream (ice cream surrounded by crushed cornflakes served with salted caramel sauce, 2 x Creme brûlée (served with tiny amount of ice cream) and last night a chocolate lava cake (no lava overcooked ha) with ice cream, oh and one ball of ice cream in a tub. All but two nights I just had water with my meal and on two nights I had wine.

I have been testing and what I have found is that my numbers are pretty good in the afternoon probably due to the alcohol. So yesterday I did a test after a cheese and ham sandwich and crisps and just stuck to water for the two hours. My BS at 12:17 was 5.1 and at 14:24 was 7.8. That is a rise of more than 2 mmol but below 8.5mmol so is that acceptable.

If your numbers start really low like in the 4's but rise to 8 after eating is that bad, they haven't gone above 8.5 but they have risen quite high from the starting point. What I am trying to understand is the problem when the sugars are sustained at a high level for a period of time or does every tiny spike above 8.5 cause the issue.

My app is showing that my target for next HBA1c is sitting at 5.9%, my average over the last 14 days is 6.8% and in last 7 is 6.6%

I had my HBA1c done just before I came on holiday, I started at 54, did a confirmation two weeks later at 47, my last test after 3 months low carb was 37.

Sorry very long post and I don't need telling off for my holiday foods, I just feel that occasionally you have to let your hair down. I will be back on it from tomorrow and tbh probably stricter and more leaning towards keto as I want to shift at least another 30lb. Thank you

@kazd63 you are doing really well! I wouldn't worry about the occasional spike. From my understanding it is prolonged high readings (7.8 or above) that can cause long term problems for Type 2s.

@kazd63 sounds like you are doing really well, the fulcutations you are seeing look fine and it is what is to expected from you have said above.

As for the high readings 7.8 is normal range for instance you will find that most of the T1D are given a band of between 4 and 10 by most Doc's/DSN.

Long term problems tend to appear when you are running at 15+ for a long period of time.

Don't get hung up on the HB1Ac numbers fomr the apps they are ONLY a guide line and can't be as accurate as blood testing.
