Hello everyone

I will be visiting Thailand in Jan next year and although i am very excited i am a little apprehensive about my control whilst out there. I count carbs pretty well here in the UK but i worry that if i have say Thai Sticky Rice i will be out of my depths in terms of how many carbs it has.

So does anyone have any tips for travelling in Thailand?

Well ive never heard of it been reffered to as "Thai sticky rice before" but, whatever floats your boat! ;) :D

So many jokes so little time..!

The carb content is roughly the same as other rices but it is very very fast.
Here's an extract from the GI index
Jasmine rice, white, cooked in rice cooker (Golden World Foods, Bangkok, Thailand)
GI 109 portion size 150g, carb 42 GL 46

The GI of glucose is 100 .

Some other sticky rices come in with a GI in the 90s. There are a few a bit lower but
For comparison:
Converted, white parboiled rice, boiled 20-30 min, Uncle Ben's®
GI 38 portion size 150g , carbs 36, GL14

Basmati, white rice, boiled 12 min
GI 52 portion size 150g , carbs 37, GL18

Maybe portions won't be as big as 150g though.

Thanks that is very helpful indeed, i had no idea that it was that fast acting! I had better make sure i do a lot of exercise after eating that stuff and/or take my bolus some time before if i am going to combat that kind of spike!

I have lived in Malaysia and visited Thailand a few times. My HbA1c was highest when in Asia and I put it down (at least partly) to the amount of rice I was eating and the availability of fresh and delicious fruit.
Of course, food is one of the attractions of Thailand so you want to sample as much as you can. Just go very easy on the rice, noodles and fruits including juices and sweetened drinks & beverages. There's plenty of fish and seafood to try and healthy green vegetables, clear soups etc.
Have a wonderful time and use plenty of suncream. I envy you!
