Two weeks ago today I was newly diagnosed with Type 2. I had an appointment with a trainee doctor who prescribed Metformin and gave me a couple of websites to view before seeing the Diabetes Doctor in our clinic.
My BG was 22.3 two weeks ago.
Information on this forum led me to try the LCHF diet. I think this has helped me enormously.
Saw the Diabetes specialist yesterday and my BG was 8.6.
He was very pleased but stated this was still high!! This was obviously achieved thru diet but when discussing the possibility of coming off all medication in the future, his response was that I would probably need it for life. I might add that the diet sheet given me was to include bread, pasta potatoes etc.
Is this the case? I have read some real secession stories on this forum.
I know that there is no "quick fix" to Diabetes but I don't really want to be medicated for the rest of my life.
Have another appointment in three months. Hopefully BG levels will be normal by then.

When people who know nothing about the LCHF diet tell me I'm killing myself being on it. I was killing myself not being on it!
Lots of us here follow the low carb, high fat diet (LCHF) and get great results. My diabetic nurse used to tell me to eat porridge and now tells me not to! She suggested that I buy 'The 8 week Sugar Diet' by Dr Michael Mosley, which is I believe, being sold in Tesco at a reduced price. It really is a great book at explaining the effect carbs have on our bodies.
Others will come here and give you great advice.

Hi and welcome,

Well done on getting that fasting level down.

What was your HbA1c when you were diagnosed? It is not a foregone conclusion that you will be medicated for life, but it certainly would be if you followed his diet sheet. Plenty of Type 2s on here have managed to come off all medication, including insulin, all my following a low carb diet that does not include bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, breakfast cereals etc. or at least, not in quantity.

This website will help you
https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/60-seconds

If you haven't already got your own glucose meter then I suggest you buy one. These are essential tools in the control of blood sugar levels, no matter what our doctors and nurses tell us. Once you have one you can learn how to use it to your best advantage by seeing which foods raise your levels more than others.

Low carbing helped me come off all medication after 5 months, it is possible! Have a good read around the forum and ask questions, so many experts here (I'm not one of them .... yet!).

Best of luck, and welcome.

Welcome from me, too, @Diane60
People can, and do, come off diabetes medication. For me it took 5 years from diagnosis. I believe that was because I followed the diet recommended that included carb foods at every meal. Wish I had discovered low carb diet sooner.
Good luck, seems you are doing very well so far.

Thank you all for your welcome!
I am sorry but I have no idea what my HBA1C was at diagnosis. There was so much information given to me that I was overwhelmed.
The Doctor was really good in most aspects. I was given a blood monitor and three month supply of strips. He also enrolled me on DESMOND, and checks for eyes and feet etc.
Will remember to have a notebook to hand on my next visit.
I feel so lucky to have found this forum. Great help with information and recipes too!

OK. Your first task is to request a print out of your blood tests, or if you are in England, ask if the surgery puts them on-line as they are supposed to do. Without this information you have no idea where you are in the scheme of things and you really do need to know. It is important. The screen prints (or on-line stuff) will tell you what you need to know, and not just regarding blood glucose but also cholesterol, lipids, liver and kidney functions, plus anything else you were tested for.
