The DESMOND Course for Type 2's

Just finished the DESMOND course and I would like to make the following observations.
The course is designed for newbies with type 2 it ranges from diet and exercise control up to insulin users and lasts for one full day, but may be split into two half day sessions.
The instructors follow the Government (NICE) line closely so don't look for self BG monitoring or specialist diet information, it's all about pee strips for testing and moderation of type and amount of diet.
Exercise is also covered along with food types and long term complications that may occur if advice is not followed, specifics are also given on the treatment you can expect from the NHS.

This course is designed to be all things to all people, covering a large age range and trying to neither alarm or upset the recipient. In these aims and as a first introduction to the condition it works.

To anyone who, following diagnosis, has had the interest to either read up, or go on the internet to find good sites such as this,it will fall well short of the mark as it leaves many questions unanswered and may lead to confusion as some of the advice is contradictory to information gained elsewhere.

In the time they have available and bearing in mind the knowledge of most recipients they do a good job and should not be decried for for following the Government guidelines.

One criticism I would make is the lack of detail on other sources of information that, should you wish, you can find on the internet or by contacting Diabetes UK (the membership pack is very good).

So, all in all, go on the course if you want to meet others in your predicament, need basic information and a general guidance on diet and healthcare.
