The Insulin Passport is simply to allow Pharmacists to CYA

Interesting. Is this idea really 4 years old? I'm trying to work out where discrimination comes into it. Being a patient reliant upon a particular drug where mistakes have been made is a problem for the NHS. This is their way of trying to sort it out. Obviously if there are better ways of achieving fewer cockups, I'm sure everybody including the NHS would be delighted to hear about it.

I'm sure it started out as a prudent way to help minimise mistakes. But like everything its gone a step to far, when I'm told I HAVE to have one and is suggested that I will not be served / issued my insulin with-out said passport. I've been told for thirty years to self administer, check and re-check.
 
I was given the card by my diabetic hospital nurse but not by the hospital that I was diagnosed in six months earlier. I was told to carry it on me as it states what insulin I am on. I have never been asked for it in the chemist but I do use the same chemist and electronic prescription service.Apart from informing a third party I am diabetic, assuming I am too ill to tell them, a hospital would give a generic insulin in the event I needed it. I was told that if the insulin changed I was to ask for a new card.
 
Sorry, I don't see your point.? Other then to congratulate you that everything in your dealings with this passport is perfect.?
 
... I normally just check the contents of the bag when the chemist hands them over. It's a simple method that's worked for years! Lol
 
Every time I collect a prescription I need to take insulin passport, exemption card and driving licence (CD drugs). THREE cards not one. Personally I don't mind but I wish they could join up the writing and produce just one! Mind you if they did wouldn't it almost be an ID card??? Just a thought!! Sue xxx
 
Just got my DNA results back from 23andMe. They can put that on the card you're suggesting mrspuddleduck, I don't mind either. BTW, I'm 2.8% Neanderthal, it explains a lot.

This seems like someones kneejerk bright (at least to them) idea.

I have had 3 different pharmacists hand over my prescription with the wrong insulin. Also had wrong test strips, wrong doses of thyroxine and in one instance someone elses blood pressure meds.

Basically I assume that they have screwed up somehow by default and check everything before leaving. They actually don't bother to seal my bags anymore until I have checked everything myself since the screw up last time was significant and I didnt notice until I got home and they were closed. Had to run off to the hospital for an emergency insulin supply that weekend.

It is yet another card that I doubt anyone will look at. Like my medical exemption certificate/card. I have been asked for it exactly once since 2002.

Your post has reminded me that I've actually got home and found somebody's insulin in my bag of goodies. I returned to the pharmacy immediately, they weren't as panicked as I thought they should have been, I can only assume that there would not have been any problems issuing the other script if the person had turned up.
 
So does this still exist? I got told by Boots that i needed to get one, or i would not be able to get my insulin in future. I got one off my GP, looked at it...thought 'this is utterly pointless' and never filled it in. Kept it a few months, then after never being asked to show it i eventually threw it out. Never once been asked for it. Never been given the wrong insulin either, they always show me it and ask me if it's the right one. So far it always has been. If it wasn't i'd say erm...no that's not it! Try again! I can see how it MAY help if you are 90 or mentally impaired, other than that i haven't got a clue what use it could be.

Like others have said, if you're admitted to hospital it's irrelevant information. Any old insulin will do surely. They're pretty sure to check your BG as soon as they bring your file up on the computer, then monitor it if they actually inject insulin.
