The SCREAM thread

I do not belong to Facebook, have never consented to any of my content on Facebook. Is there a way to opt out of forwarding any of my content from this private website?

Most companies/sites have terms and conditions, rules and regulations. If on Facebook and I saw an ad or something that I was interested in and clicked on it, 'What is the origin of your name' ? as an example, it will only let the person participate IF they are willing to click on the part that wants your personal information ie email address and also the names of your friends and family, basically give a stranger all your personal details so I always leave it.
It's like the sales guy that used to knock on your door, talk the legs of a hind donkey, with a his big foot jammed in the door, but on the internet, it can be creepy and god only knows who has our personal information

Hi @Galja , I just wanted to make a small point. This (DCUK) site is not private. All site content can be viewed without logging in, but you need to be logged in to respond and interact with forum members.

As @AndBreathe has commented, please take time to read the information in the link that has been provided.

I think the issue is not so much that the DCUK site is not private; I imagine most of us realised that when we joined. But the site is not particularly likely to attract casual browsers without any connection to diabetes.

Facebook, on the other hand. is pretty much an open forum and encourages casual browsing across the entire site. It is also poorly regulated and controlled and, although I am a Facebook user, I am very cautious about what I post and take great care to protect people and material that I choose not to make available to the public forum. In my opinion, the opportunities for abuse in such a poorly-regulated forum are immense, particularly if one's personal health issues are to become the subject of open discussion on Facebook.

I appreciate that DCUK wishes to attract new members and social media offers an opportunity to reach a great many people with minimum effort. However, with a subject as sensitive as diabetes, I assumed that either some form of censorship would be brought into play to protect members' anonymity, or members would be notified in advance of the intention to "publish" any of their material. This seems a pretty basic courtesy which would be very easy to manage, and I am dismayed to find that it is not the case.

This revelation has certainly had an impact on what I am prepared to share on the forum in the future, and leaves me questioning my safety as a member and the protection of my confidentiality.

My questions are for the @Administrator ..
Goodness I can wait .. Now I know they are on holiday .. Well I didn't know before lol ...

I remember when I joined here I didn't read terms and conditions , I was to desperate for assistance and information ..
I to have FB and other virtual interests , but I make my own choices , with my own controls on them...

It's the seeing your chat avatar etc , appear on your FB feed , it's a shock , it's not moderated either ..so anyone can say anything

I have seen photos recently from dcuk of young children and their stories , I guessed , rightly or wrongly that permission was given ... Not just random choices .. Of the children .. Using insulin pumps I recall ..from memory .

Anyway that's my scream , terms and conditions can change , be amended etc , all good management do that , with reviews working in partnership ..

So for the few who don't want to be on FB .. Please @Administrator listen to the requests
Discussion always welcome .. no more screaming today .. It's bank holiday weekend and casualty .. Kat

I know eddie on the original thread about members concerns over FB posting our quotes, (but he was not the OP) asked why an advertisement promoting the forum could not be used instead............. I think we are still waiting for that response, what do others think about this idea, it's a winner from me , thumbs up

advertisement
ədˈvəːtɪzm(ə)nt,-tɪs-/
noun
  1. a notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service, or event or publicizing a job vacancy.
Edited to say it wasn't eddie, apologises eddie, but it was another member who mentioned an advertisement, Andy12345.

I remember that

The anonymous call to Social Services to see who is the caseworker? You can say you have an important piece of documentation for her/him. Then, when she/he calls, you can document you are the loving grandmama!
I doubt they would give out that information especially during a court case

Yes and it could be seen as devious too, I would rather be straight and honest. We are back in the family court next Friday, 2nd September.

Although posts may be appearing of Facebook the DCUK forums are still open to be read by ANYONE.....you only have to sign up to be able to reply.......
But I guess there is more chance of coming upon them without actively seeking them out.

Very valid points, Kat, particularly with regard to the under-18s or those desperately seeking some urgent help.
Come on DCUK, it's time to stop hiding behind your "Terms and Conditions" and see how they can be amended to support the requests of your members!

Excellent idea. From what I've seen of the DCUK Facebook page, I'd be surprised if it attracts many new members anyway - there seems to be a great deal of bickering and backstabbing, and there's frequently a pretty negative vibe to the page.

I imagine it's probably covered by this clause:
9.3 Any content you input or upload to our Website will be considered non-confidential and non-proprietary, and we have the right to use, copy, distribute and disclose to third parties any such content for any purpose.

I consider this statement is relevant:

"These Terms also apply to your use of our Website and all branded pages on third party platforms (such as Facebook or YouTube) (insofar as they are applicable) and set out the terms on which you may access / make use of our Website. Use of our Website includes accessing, browsing or registering to use our Website or any of the Services within it."

This is the third paragraph of the page. Apologies, I'm having trouble copying images at the moment.

@debrasue , I imagine the incidence of non-diabetic and non-diabetes related viewers of the site are likely increased due to and increased interest in reduced carb eating, eating full fat, the 8 week sugar diet, 5:2 and intermittent fasting activity. There have been popular and well populated threads on all of these topics.

Personally, I have never or would never us a photograph of myself or anything that could be reliably identified as uniquely me or a possession of mine as an avatar. Perhaps I am more cautious than most, but it's how I am.

Thanks, AndBreathe - this is certainly one lesson I am taking away from this issue. But it's also going to limit what I'm prepared to post on the forum in the future. (I won't be posting any more recipes, for instance!)

Some folk saying on here that posts on here they make are turning up on Facebook

Whoever runs this site kindly do not put any of my posts I make on here onto Facebook

Thanks

Unfortunately, Cumbs, as things stand at present it appears that, by signing up to join DCUK, we have consented to any material we post being available to be used, copied, distributed or disclosed to any third parties Admin sees fit, for any purpose.

Some of us are not at all happy with this as it relates to Facebook in particular, and are asking @Administrator to review the T&Cs to see whether compromises can be made to take members' wishes into account.

v

I'm pretty certain "any third parties" isn't totally accurate, but that's my interpretation of the T&Cs.

If I google my user name, loads come up, but not related to me, or from here.
