Another example of an UPF causing the body to protest against hidden suspect ingredients! I am always wary of these processed “foods” they often surprise you, I try to stick to natural homemade foods so I know whats in them.A lot of food claims to be "low sugar", "low carb" but, despite that, it can spike your blood sugars. You have to read the ingredients very carefully
This morning I ate an Adonis Keto High Protein Bar. I was not expecting a significant rise in my blood sugars as it uses erythritol as a sweetener. However, in 50 minutes it caused my blood glucose to rise from 6.5 to 9.5. I was a bit surprised, so I read the ingredients label carefully and discovered it contains a significant amount of maltodextrin.
It turns out that maltodextrin has a GI of between 110 and 136, which is twice as much as table sugar, which explains the spike in my blood sugar. I did a quick search on the forums here and saw it was mentioned quite a few times, one being that it was included in Sainsburys Almond Milk, I did a quick check and found it in Sainsburys Soya Milk. I think I will only buy Alpro Soya Milk and Almond Milk in the future. See ...
That’ll do it for sure. It’s also the main ingredient in many artificial supermarket “sweeteners” making a mockery of their sugar replacement marketing.contains a significant amount of maltodextrin.
It does raise questions about what we eat. How many times have I told myself that I need to look deeper into the labelling on packagesIt was a shock to me when I learned from this Board that supermarket sliced meat and roast chicken also has added starch. By the way, if you're looking to save some money on groceries, I recently came across an article here with the best coupon sites. It could be really helpful for getting discounts on your next shopping trip!

I drink Blue DiamondI did a quick check of various Unsweetened Almond Milk brands ...
Sainsburys contains maltodextrin
Aldi, Asda, Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons and Blue Diamond do not contain maltodextrin
Gluten is a binder, makes bread fluffy and light. They have to replace it with something and yes potato starch is often the replacement ingredient. I have all the ingredients to make a replacement flour. Sorghum flour is another replacement and at 93 g of carbs per cup makes it a no go.The surprising ingredient I found a few years ago.
Is in gluten free products.
So instead of the gluten, they replace with potato starch.
So someone with an imbalance in intolerance to spuds or starch, this will spike as certain as eating sugar.
Then again, gluten intolerance, should you go anywhere near bread, even without the gluten, if you are T2?
I remember double diamond.I drink Blue Diamond
https://rudehealth.com/products/ultimate-almond. Only water and almonds. In Waitrose and SainsburyI did a quick check of various Unsweetened Almond Milk brands ...

It has 5 ingredients according to Morrisons - water, rice, almonds, sunflower oil and sea salt. Has 10 g carbs per 100ml, probably from the rice.https://rudehealth.com/products/ultimate-almond. Only water and almonds. In Waitrose and Sainsbury
That’s one thing I would never touch as I’ve found 3-4 skittles does a good job for me and it’s quick and refreshingA lot of food claims to be "low sugar", "low carb" but, despite that, it can spike your blood sugars. You have to read the ingredients very carefully

The Alpro No Sugars Almond Milk has 0 carbs ... https://www.alpro.com/uk/products/drinks/almond-drinks/almond-roasted-no-sugars
Oat milk seems to be so fashionable lately. It’s probably the highest in carbs and sugar but I suppose people think it’s a good option because of the oats.I read an article about Oatly milk the other day ... https://www.jeffnobbs.com/posts/is-oatly-healthy
It reckons Oatly oat milk has a similar glycemic index as coca cola, so not great for type 2 diabetics, plus it contains rape seed oil which causes inflammation and diabetic complications.
