Could Diabetes UK invite the new prime minister who is diabetic to bring to the public's attention the importance of having blood sugar tested for the detection of prediabetes? Prince Harry has done an HIV test today and it got lots of publicity.

I like the sound of this, sadly I feel the resources of the NHs would be stretched too much ....

I'm totally for the initiative just a realist :)

Prevention is better than cure. If more people were identified as prediabetic they could alter their lifestyle and not develop type 2. This would save the NHS loads.

This is already available for everyone aged 40 and above. Weight, height, BP. and full blood tests including an HbA1c. Invitations are sent out for them to make an appointment. If all is well they will be called in again in 5 years. It used to be for everyone over 60. This was reduced to 40 about a year ago. May be not all surgeries do this, but mine certainly does.

Great. She could promote it then so that more people are aware.

Is not the health of the nationon of her priorities?

Yes of course it is. My point is that awareness is already out there.
The media is full of it every day. The over 40s are invited to attend for the health checks I mentioned above.
I would personally prefer her to concentrate on the EU and the economy right now.

There is no need for a prime minister to promote individual NHS policies.
That would be micromanaging to an extent that would interfere with her role as PM.

When a patient hits 40 years, it triggers a flag in the computer system of the patient's doctor's practise. A letter is then generated to invite the patient in for the standard checks, which include those listed by @Bluetit1802

Of course, it is down to the individual patient to actually make the appointment and attend, but that is the case for any preventative medical testing (breast cancer screening, bowel cancer screening...)

Also, Theresa May is type 1, so might not be the best person to be promoting awareness for what sounds like type 2 screening/prevention. I would find it confusing anyway. A screening test at 40 will make no difference to someone developing rapid onset autoimmune type 1 aged 56 (as Ms May did) ...

What disappointing responses. I thought that people on here might be more receptive to ideas for positive change. But as often happens in the UK it is the naysayers who are most vociferous.

Why not approach Diabetes UK and ask them then? Just in case you hadn't quite realised it, this site isn't Diabetes UK, the Diabetes UK link is: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/

There's often a bit of confusion over that. :)

I would suggest it's those capable of looking beyond their own personal needs, and seeing that there is more to life at the moment,
But if you prefer to call anyone that doesn't agree with you a naysayer, that's entirely your view I'm afraid.

We are receptive for positive change but we are realists too, although Theresa May does have diabetes I think her time will be taken up by other matters as @Bluetit1802 points out above, there's an MP called Keith Vaz who has type 2 diabetes and I believe he is quite proactive in campaigning on behalf of diabetes causes.

No need to. The surgeries contact their patients to invite them in. Up to the patients to accept or decline the invitation.

Just imagine the outcry if the Prime Minister were to start on about people being screened for diabetes. There are policies already in place, and she also has cabinet ministers to oversee them. She would be ridiculed beyond belief as would any of the cabinet ministers if they were seen to be promoting their own particular 'hobby horse'.

Totally agree, it costs more for the NHS to fix the problems of Diabetics than it does to monitor. Anyway I go back to my Soap Box and rant about how the government should be making half the medicines we consume, because they would save millions and also employ thousands in making the common medicines we rely on daily.
Why buy them, when we can make them ourselves. With Diabetes medicine reaching up to 300% more than it was 5 years ago.

@noblehead . A bit of a raw nerve there. Mr Vaz is type2 and is proactive. There are a lot of fellow type 2's in his constituency, there are also a lot of votes to be had. This is the MP who wants to ban the coca cola truck from visiting his constituency at Christmas but has no qualms with the abundance of sweet mart shop's selling products far more dangerous than coca cola. Ban the sweet mart shop's/ lose votes. Rant over. Sorry
