They keep referring to "how young I am"

I have been diagnosed with diabetes approx 5 weeks or so ago. I have been to the doctor maybe five times since, and I am also set up to go to clinics. Whats worrying me is that various doctors are calling me up telling me my readings are bad and we have to get it sorted quickly because "I am so young" i am mid 40's. My regular doctor thinks I am doing great - I am averaging 8 on the blood sugars now whereas i was in the high teens. I am now getting calls from other doctors who have been looking in my file saying the readings are very bad and they have to get it sorted "as I am so young". It gets frustrating as I am doing my very best to get my blood sugars right but I am not an expert after a month.

I was diagnosed T2 when I was 20 (now 33). Maybe I should be more worried than I already am???

Hi Patch.

Don't get me wrong - I'm glad they are taking the time to call me and they come across as really trying to help me, but when they say that it really makes me think there is something they are not telling me. I feel like I am the youngest person they ever saw with diabetis. Of course I am grateful for the concern but it is quite worrying all the same.

Also after only really discovering this a little over a month ago, is my BS doing okay? I wish I could regulate them at the 6 mark but its hard.

I still have the L plates on

hypocrisy, prejudice and the corrupt legal system (never got compensation I deserved from an accident)
I'm early 40's and still got the L plates on too. Got fasting blood test and urine test next thur, my attitude is life goes on. I do my bit by diet and exercise and don't worry myself with what the docs do. Like some old expression grant me the courage to change what I can and the wisdom to accept what I can't-then goes on to say the sense to hide the bodies of those who p*ssed me off, but I don't need to get that far!

I think they must have different definiions of "Young" for diabetics.

When I was first diagnosed I was almost 60 but drs kept elling me they were concerned that"such a young person " as myself was not responding - first to the medication then later to the treament for retinopathy. They expected a better response from such a "young" person.

Now I believe I looked a little younger than my chronological age but not THAT much.
Whenever I queried the phrase they always replied hat they meant "young in diabees"??

I found this strange as i was also told that I had probably had the disease all my adult life so would have been the same age approximately as Patch had they diagnosed it sooner

I still don't get it and just assume hey have their own definition.

Maybe hey were acually querying the type 2 diagnosis for you as this is unusual?

What! Only 52:? You're a mere babe- a spring chicken! Are you sure you weren't misdiagnosed?

I hope that helps - or does it need to be from a "professional"? :D

Not really knowing what's going on inside my Endocrine system!!!
I keep getting that also (I'm 34) Got insulin tests on the 30th May so will see how this goes.

I was diagnosed Mar, no strips (despite asking and asking) - trying not to be too frustated, following this forum obsessively for guidance.

I'm over the dismay/anger part and just ticking along now. But my nurse said it can take 6mths to come to term with the diagnosis

I think that the Dr's want you to be able to manage diabetes so that you can live a long and healthy life and that is why they are keeping tabs on you. You are comparatively young but there are children and adolescents being diagnosed with Type 2.

It takes a while to sort out your management so don't be too downhearted. Any fall in blood sugar readings is good news. Going from high teens to 8's is certainly progress. 8)

I am 37 and they keep referring to me being young!
Also I'm not overweight, this also seems to cause some surprise!
