Hi

diagnosed jusr over 2 weeks ago and losing weight now , eating better , no rubbish..when i was diagnosed the nurse asked me to have my cholestrol checked, 2 yrs ago...it was 5.0 tryglizerides was 2.57

the bloods i gave on monday of this week came back as 4.6 and tryglits 1.97,
so why did they suggest on the phone that i would need a statin as all diabetes suffers need them!!
i asked to wait a few months for my nxt blood checks and see whats happening,

i was feeling rather pleased with my self to say the bloods are results from before my healthy eating so can only get better surely.
my Hubby takes statins and i know the problems they give him

thanx for reading
p,s
could someone exlpain what is an hypo? and what the symptoms are please? many thanx xx

It is a fact that Statins offer diabetics a level of protection from cardivascular problems that could otherwise be an expected complication.

In low doses they have little or no side effects, in higher doses there are some side effects.

A low dose is a reasonable precaution for any diabetic and is an accepted treatment offered by many Diabetic Health advisors.

Like all medications, you can accept or refuse them, it is a personal choice, however it is worth listening to what your Doctor has to say about Statins, they can be a life saver.

The actual HDL / LDL test results will determine the dose, if your results are good a low dose could be all you need.

Hi roxy, I have been on statins for cholestrol and trigs 4 or 5 years before I was diagnosed with diabetes. My cholestrol levels where 11, and my trigs where 10. So I was pretty bad. I can honestly say I have never had any side effects since the day I started taking them. Both levels well under control now :D

Hi Roxy, I was diagnosed type 2 Dec 10, and was told any diabetic over the age of 40 is meant to go on statins, I asked for time to try and lower it on my own, it was 5.2 and they gave me 3 months it didn't work and I started taking 20mg a day in March, was dreading it but up to now I don't have any side effects.

My way of thinking is its better to take them now and prevent further problems down the line.

Take care

Julie :)
