Doses of vitamin B1 (thiamine) can reverse early kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes, research shows.

The team from Warwick University tested the effect of vitamin B1, which is found in meat, yeast and grain, on 40 patients from Pakistan. The treatment stopped the loss of a key protein in the urine, the journal Diabetologia reports.

Charity Diabetes UK called the results "very promising" - but said it was too early for any firm conclusions.

The latest findings build on earlier work by the Warwick University team, showing that many diabetes patients have a deficiency of thiamine. According to the researchers, this cheap and readily available supplement could benefit most people with diabetes - both type 1 and type 2 - as between 70% and 90% of people with diabetes are thiamine deficient.

these results would make sense as chronic alcoholism damages the renal system and one of the staple diets given by gp's is thiamine and b complex vitamins. the other benefit of thiamine is it will improve memory, wernickes encephalitis caused by drinking too much over a prolonged period results in a lack of thiamine in the brain, which results in loss of memory. this is usualy improved with thiamine and or b complex over time as is the reversal of damage to liver and kidneys.

There is lots of evidence that various vitamins are beneficial in certain instances and it really annoys me when "experts" say that "they are not needed if you have a good, balanced diet".

What the experts fail to realise is, that many people do not have a "good, balanced diet" for various reasons and for them it is better to supplement with vitamins than not to.

The only vitamin supplement I take is Vitamin "D" because it has been recently proven that most people in the UK do not get enough Vitamin D from sunlight or diet. It is also thought that it is crucial that people with lung ailments increase intake of Vitamin D as it protects the lungs. As I am asthmatic I have been supplementing with high-dose Vitamin D (25 microgrammes per day) for two years now.
