Thinking about it  There is not a lot of difference between the Custard and my Egg Nogg, apart from the Rum, Brandy and bit of cinnamon two birds with one stone, I feel another plan coming here

Egg Nogg Custard!!!!!! Now that certainly sounds a great idea for using in my festive trifle.

OOOOOOOH, Egg Nogg Custard in Trifle, I bet that would be nice with Mango and the more exotic fruits instead of the usual Raspberries!

Could you not get Diabetes friendly sweets from Boots so you don't feel so left out?

You could Thortons have some diabetic chocolates, but the sweetener that is used has an unwelcome effect on some people as it 'stimulates the bowel'

I try to just have one or two chocolates or usually I buy 85% chocolate. Lidl and Aldi do it in a pack of 5 bars inside a normal sized wrapper. Each bar is the perfect size, enough to satisfy, but no enough to push my levels up. You would need to test though to make sure it doesn't effect you.

Ooh, thanks for the parmesan thins idea! Sounds yummy. I'll have to try those out : ) For me, the hardest part is resisting the tins of quality streets! The purple caramel ones just so happen to be my favourite :? Not good!

I've survived christmas twice with diabetes now, the first I was so scared to eat anything I actually found myself hungry and miserable. The second, I had grown in confidence, completely pigged out (especially on those **** quality street chocolates) and missed half of the day, due to being crashed out on the sofa, in a sugar high sleepy coma!

So I'm hoping to get the balance a little better this year! Third time lucky

urggh cant' believe my thread has been hi-jacked by recipes for trifle - yuk

I'm going to have a go at making micepies with wholemeal pastry & try to make some not so bad mincemeat so I can have the occasional mince pie - I make christmas cake but never eat it anyway.

had a visit with the dibetic nurse at the practice last week & her advice was to have a few days off the diet & en joy myself

Maybe not the right attitude but its once a year I don't go daft but if I fancy something I have a little bit of it. I like chocolate so I have a few miniature heroes or whatever is about just don't go daft is my advice.

It's gonna creep up on us, so I for one am glad of the reminder.

Last year was my first as a diabetic and as I was only diagnosed on 14th dec my resolve was sky high. not one chocolate past my lips. Not one crisp or pringle or pastry item.

I did however, have lots of cheese, peanuts instead and grapes (little did I know then). I had 2 mince pies with cream and that was it.

This year I am much more knowledgable and currently my resolve is still extremely high, I'm too scared to think of christmas as a time off from diabetes for treats. Perhaps because I am bloody lucky with not having a sweet tooth. My treat will be roasters and parsnips.

I am going to try the parmesan crisps.

Nairns cheese oat biscuits are low carb as well and nice too.

Me too Mary! I have decided to follow Dr Bernsteins advice and ditch the turkey and have ordered a goose. Roast goose, gorgeous and all that lovely fat :D Horrendously expensive but then I won't be spending money on choccies and tins of biccies. My treat will be one -or very possibly two small crispy roasties with lovely fluffy insides cooked in the fat.........
Would be looking forward to it if I wasn't a bah humbug Xmas person.

I honestly think you DON'T NEED to think about Christmas? Who says you have to overeat and over-drink at Christmas? The media say it, and the supermarkets say it by filling up their stores with 'extra' food! I am a veggie and I am always appalled at how 'Christmas nuts' appear every year. I eat them as a main part of my diet, but apparently meat-eaters are expected to eat them as 'extras' at Christmas. WHy do you need 'extras'? And oranges suddenly come to the fore - we should be eating them all year round! I never eat anything 'more' or different at Christmas. You must have noticed that suddenly in January everyone says 'I must go on a diet I've eaten too much over Christmas!' BUT WHY?????? It makes money for the supermarkets. Be strong, resist being a puppet and having your strings pulled by tv adverts and supermarkets full of junk you just don't need! Diabetic or not!

The great British public seem to be being manipulated into thinking that to 'celebrate' you need to eat and drink. You don't!

As far as I know today, is Friday 12th of October. Christmas day I assume will still be 25th December. I am not going to think about Christmas so early in the year. Why make myself miserable for another 2.5 months. Nothing will change. Can you still buy Hovis crackers, if so are these wholemeal ?
