Thinning hair and acne

Hi everyone. For the past couple of months my hair has been thinning. I think it may have something to do with having anaemia. The doctor also tested my pro lactin levels and they seemed slightly high. Has anyone else had thinning hair? Also I have quite a few spots. Is it safe to go on antibiotics? X

If your prolactin level is high it might be due to something going on in your pitutiary and this can affect the thyroid stimulating hormone too. Low thyroid hormones can make your hair thin, among other things. With the spots thrown in I'd say you need to see an endocrinologist.

But as you say anaemia can cause thinning hair as can high blood sugar.

@Brunneria do you have any advice?

Hi,

Thanks for flagging me, @Totto

We've had some posts on prolactin before, which I will have a look for.
But the most important thing is to find out how raised it is.
I believe that stress can raise prolactin, but if it gets silly-high (that's a technical term ;)) then the explanation is usually physical.

If those don't help, please pop back and ask whatever you like. :)

Hi Totto thanks for your reply. I did have my thyroid tested and it was fine. It's just my pro lactin levels were slightly high. I am having them retested again. I hope it's not a tumor in the pituitary gland. Is it to do with producing too much of a hormone?

Hi Brunneria thanks for your comment! And for sending those links! Very interesting!

I had my thyroid test year after year and told it was fine. It wasn't but the test result were apparently.

So what were your results? Prolactin, and the rest? If you could post them all with reference ranges we will do what we can from our knowledge and experience to help you.
