Hi, I am recently diagnosed. Am i mad for thinking that i can tell when my BS is high by my massive increase in thirst and even worse tiredness? My husband thinks i have lost it. But im pretty sure :) For example, I have been LCHF since diagnosis and i had a relapse at lunch by having a flat bread with my lunch, and 2 hours later i feel ridiculously thirtsy. Tested and 8.6. That for me is high!

Hi,
It's been mentioned several times on this forum (but I don't know what the evidence is), that your kidneys start filtering glucose out of your blood and into your urine, when your BG rises over 10.5ish.

My experience bears that out - I widdle extra when I go much over 9, but I have doubts about the accuracy of my meter at 9+, so I cannot say for sure.

Regarding the thirst... Well, I find carbs make me thirsty. Particularly bread. It is as if I have eaten a sponge. I drink hugely, blow up with water retention, then wee it all out a day or two later.

In my case, the thirst isn't related to BG, it is just the water retaining quality of grains. Potato has a much smaller effect.

I can agree with the tiredness. I start to yawn and feel sleepy when my levels go much above 8 these days. Pre diagnosis I used to have to go for some fresh air after lunch at work in order to stay awake.

Sounds like mild hyperglycaemia, don't be too scared of readings of 8 mmol/l. I'm on insulin and still 10-12 mmol/l is a good reading for me as I was in the high twenties and even tested 31.3 mmol/l once and took a lot of work to get it down. When you start getting really tired and easily fatigued you should start thinking your BGs and your HbA1c levels are rising. My HbA1c levels are atrocious still and am very sluggish most days and can sleep for ages without being refreshed all due to the high glucose in my blood making it sticky. Also another sign of high sugars is skin infections especially boils and abscesses. Hope this helps. Good luck

If you want info on what blood glucose levels should be, and what the consequences are if they are too high, then http://www.bloodsugar101.com is the best source I have ever found. It is written for type 2s.

My personal view is that I want to be below 8 at all times, preferably at non diabetic levels, which is definitely below 8!
