People who interrupt you when you're talking and people who won't listen.
I don't know if it's the power of suggestion or what, but I swear since the day my GP discovered I had hyperglycaemia, I have felt so flipping thirsty, I could drink a swimming pool! My BG is reasonable (I thin) - about 5.5-6.7 on waking and max 6.8 two hours after eating a low-ish carb meal (otherwise more like 7.8, but I only eat anything sugary about once a week). Does anyone else feel like this? I wonder if it's the lower volume of food as I did eat loads of fruit and veg before and I'm eating more fats, less carns and only really sticking to berries and small amounts of exotic fruit occasionally.

Are you thirsty, or is it just a dry mouth? Just asking because I have a dry mouth sometimes and I know it can't be thirst because I drink gallons, and a small sip of water gets rid of it.

Hmmmm...I know this is going to sound really stupid, but I'm not sure how to tell the difference LOL. My mouth feels wet physically, but my head is telling me to drink, drink, drink. I suppose that's thirst? It's been like this for 3 weeks...been drinking like a fish. I thought that with BG in the range I'm getting (high 5's to high 6's) I shouldn't really be feeling thirsty because of the BG. I'm currently blaming my GP and his powers of suggestion ;)

If I was you I would go to a pharmacy to get them to double check your readings as you normally only get them symptoms at a lot higher levels than that

Type 2 diagnosed 24/01/2013.
NovoRapid, Lantus, Victoza, Metformin (sr), Simvistatin

I'm drinking more water at the moment and suspect that, on a low carb diet, I take in less water than I used to. Not having the fruit, fruit juice, pasta, rice, couscous, which all carry a lot of liquid, could make a difference. It's also been quite warm recently, so this could account for more thirst. I very much doubt if it is your sugar levels, as measured.

I've used 2 different meters and run a check strip too, so even allowing for the 20% tolerance, my highest reading ever was only about 12...and that was only on 1 test, after 2 slices of bread (which I wouldn't normally eat). Am registering with a new GP in a week or so, so I'll get them to re-test.

I've often seen it advised to 'drink lots of water' when on a low carb diet.

Often people get 'carb flu' when they start, and that can partly be due to dehydration, but we should continue to drink lots even after our bodies adjust.

I think it is a combination of things, in my case
- I'm not holding so much fluid retention, so fewer 'reserves' to draw on
- when I drink, it passes through quicker and more easily, so afterwards, I need another cuppa
- my meat intake has increased a little, so the kidneys like to dilute the urea (result of protein breakdown) more, so uses more liquid. Ever noticed how dark your wee gets after a high protein meal?
- salt intake can change a lot when we switch to low carb
There may be others!

None of those are bad, they just mean our bodies have switched to a slightly different way of working.

For me, an extra few glasses of water are a small price to pay. ;)

Ahhh, that makes perfect sense! Thanks x
