This is probably a silly question...

Morning all, just a quick question about levels after eating...

If I eat dinner and two hours later I'm at 11.9 but three hours later (after the Novorapid has worn off) I'm 7.9, is that ok? Or is the aim to not get to 11.9 so therefore I should have bolused more?

I'm sorry if it's a silly question, just trying to get my head around this thing!

Hope you all have a great day.

(Edit to be clearer) your dose looks right, in that you return to right levels. Try taking the bolus 10-15-20 min before eating and see if it reduces the peak.

It's not a silly question, but you need to explain a little more. Are you T1, and what is your starting BG. In short, going off the info given, I would guess that you need to time your insulin better. If, after 4 or 5 hours your BG has returned to the starting point, then you have taken the correct amount, but the raise was caused by taking it too late. Take it earlier (try 5 or 10 mins sooner) and see if it improves. If the final BG is higher than the pre food BG, then it is also due to too little insulin, so you need to check your Insulin to Carb (I:C) ratio and possibly it was too little insulin also. Hope this helps.

The nice guidelines say type 1 diabetics should aim to be 7-9 at least 90 minutes after eating. So 11.9 at 2 hours post prandial is probably a bit high.

But I'd be careful about assuming novorapid has worn off at 3 hours, it could last more like 5 and that's why you drop down at hour 3.

I'd also be careful about assuming that more insulin will stop the post prandial spike. In reality all a bigger bolus will do is allow the pp spike and then drop you even lower at the three hour mark when it starts working.

It might be worth looking at the timing of the bolus. If you can get the insulin in your system and working when the carbs hit you might actually avoid such a spike and find you need less insulin.

This is a good article that explains pre bolusing - https://www.diabetesselfmanagement....blood-glucose-management/strike-the-spike-ii/

Hi there! 11.9 is probably a touch high. As others have said, it's more likely down to timing. Perhaps some tweaking of your timings and be sure you're counting the carbs as accurately as you can, might stop the spike up to 11-12. Not a silly question, IMO a good question :)
