Hi Walterpup, and welcome to the forum.

I'm not T1, so don't have any personal experience to offer to you or your son, however, travel across time zones comes up fairly regularly on the forum, especially at this time of year. That said, I've just tried a forum search and nothing much incredibly relevant came back for me.

I do recall though, that @himtoo is an experienced T1 and pond-hopper, albeit I seem to remember it mainly being from the eastern side of the US/Canada. He is also probably more likely to recall other T1s with relevant experiences than me though. (No pressure there, himtoo. :) )

Is your son using a pump or is he on multiple injections daily, as I seem to recall that could potentially impact on the advice people might like to offer?

I hope your son has an uneventful flight back to UK.

Hi @Walterpup
welcome to the forum !!:)

I have travelled to the west coast of the USA many times from Manchester while on injections and more recently also on a pump.
there are some other people that make this sort of journey too.

if your son is on MDI ( multiple daily injections ) it is really wise to test pretty often on board a long flight
( LA to England will be around 11 hours I think )
as for injections I would normally take my normal basal dose at LA Time ( so either 6pm to 9pm ) - this will be during the flight I am guessing
bolus doses for food as per normal on board

arrival home is normally the following morning ( so losing 8 hours ) and that evening I would take a reduced Basal dose
( 60-70% ) -- this will help with not too much insulin on board during the inevitable lie in from the jet lag the following day

a lot of testing is a key in my opinion.

Thank you so much everyone I will relay all of your comments over to my son and he's on four injections a day I did google this for him on departing England and arriving in LA going by a guy named barney storey who is a bicycle racer and got it right for Jamie and it appears every thing that is said now follows so hope I can advise him properly on departing LA and arrival home although waiting for Jamie to get back to me on times it just plays on my mind that Jamie gets it right and I think he will I've dealt with jamies diabetes for twenty eight yrs now advising him think I annoy him at times but he's my eldest son and his diabetes is still part of my life to even though he lives with his girlfriend who is really good with her knowledge as well I love this site I've just joined for Jamie thank you every one for your lovely replies has eased my mind x
