Tips For Uni?

Like many others, i'm going to be starting uni next month and was just wondering if any of guys could offer any advice or tips about managing T1 in a student environment. I'm pretty good at handling my blood sugar w/ alcohol, but are there any cheap meal ideas you recommend (fairly low carb please)? My mum's intent on getting me a fairly-sized mini fridge because she doesn't want people nicking my food as my diet's a bit more limited, but i'm sure if I just tell them then it should be fine, right?

Anyway, sorry for what must be a common question but I couldn't see another person asking. Cheers.

For cheap meals bbcs like 100 cheap and easy meals are good and so are good house keeping, these aren't specifically low carb meals but some of them you could easily make low carb. Re your mum to be honest I didn't have a problem with people stealing food especially once they saw that it was important I did have food etc ready to eat, I would advise not getting a small fridge yourself, but maybe for the first term get a plastic box with insulin in it, as sometimes uni fridges can get a bit horrible !! My advice would be you would be surprised how many people just don't notice that your diabetic and when I told people I thought people would freak out and if anything I was more nervous about telling them then they are ever bothered about me having diabetes. I choose not to drink masses the first night as my friends obviously didn't know me that well, and as we got to know each other more and more I can now pretty much drink how much I want as my friends know exactly how much is enough, and to remember to always feed me before bed :) if you've got alcohol sorted your half way there, remember though uni is stressful that first week and you will be doing more than you realise so maybe just extra testing but apart from that have loads of fun ( meant to say at beginning I'm 20 and currently at uni) pm if you have any questions

Yeah I'd agree with izzy, when I started uni a couple of years ago never had any issues with flatmates stealing my food, everyone just ate their own stuff. I always had emergency dextrose or something similar in my room but more for convenience at night rather than worry people might take it!

Cheap meals for me meant bulk cooking, so with bolognese, casseroles etc, you can cook down cheap cuts of meat and end up with a good, low carb meal!

Good that you're already ok with alcohol, definitely took me a bit of getting used to :P

Also I have no idea what your student accommodation is like but mine definitely would not have had the extra space for a mini fridge, it was cramped as it was.

And again as izzy said, with change of routine and stress in first few weeks, test. Test constantly. Even if you don't feel stressed, your body might!

Best of luck :)
