Hi. I know this topic has been raised before but if someone could just give me a simplish answer I would be grateful.

I'm newly diagnosed type 2, trying to deal with things by dietary changes. I have been feeling very tired a lot of the time, especially in the mornings (now!) and I really struggle to shake this off. I have noticed that this is one of the symptoms that is caused by Diabetes but what causes it exactly?

I have just done a blood sugar test and it is 11.9, is it the high sugars that cause the drowsiness?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi,

It probably is the high BG's causing you to feel tired and energyless.

When your BG is high pretty much most of your body tries to work overtime to compensate to get rid of the glucose in your system. Few examples;

You body will expel glucose in urine, sweat and saliva. so it's likely you will feel dehydrated and headachy.

Glucose builds around the eyes, causing blurriness and again headaches.

Your heart can sometimes have to work harder to pump the blood around your body.

So as your body is doing all these extra things and more, it's likely to feel tired.

As your BG is high it could be possible your body has turned to breaking down fat for energy if it can't process the glucose in your bloodstream (ketosis)

I can certainly tell if i have had elevated BG's for a little while as i can sleep for england!!! :lol:

Someone maybe along with a more scientific way of explaining things but it's a start :)

As you get better with your diabetes and start to get your BG's down you will definately start to feel a difference :)

Er, I don't know the science either but I know before diagnosis I was very lethergic, not physically tired but just lying in bed coz I couldn't be bothered. Now I know the problem and have made changes to my diet I feel a lot better and a bit more energetic in the mornings (I always think mornings would be better if they started later) so I put tiredness/lethergy down to high blood sugar and the previous post explains to me why that is!
