I am going to see consultant for first time tomorrow(finally!),he wants to do a HBA1C test while I'm there and wondered wheteher or not I need to fast for this test - not testing for lipids just HBA1C.
Also asked me if possible to bring two urine samples one from tonight and one from tomorrow morning and wondered what best time to do these tests would be? before or after food?

We are normally asked to fast, & the phlebotomist may refuse to test if you have eaten. Safer to go fasting. The test report will include the BS reading as well as the HbA1c. Take a banana with you. You can drink water only.

If you have got the blood test form, it will say "fasting" if required.

I've never been asked to fast for the hbac1 test in over 30 years. Any procedure I've had done which requires fasting has always been stated immediately.

Thanks for your replies,
I think you only have to fast if they are testing for HBA1C and lipids/cholesterol at the same time, but just wanted to confirm.

Regards Pete
