To test or not to test....that is the question....

Thanks nosher
I was in hospital January, after an operation on my abdomen to correct problems from surgery years ago. Quite a big op, and had been in ICU. Even though I hadn't been testing on advice of GP the hospital staff insisted on testing several times a day. I don't normally eat high carb, but that was the only sort of food they were providing in the hospital, and the only way I was getting out of there was if I could digest food. It was a lot of rice, pasta, and cheap hospital stuff. I also has to rely on other people for meals at home for a couple of months, easy for them to make pasta etc. Was brought lots of chocs and stuff by visitors and it would have been rude not to eat them. So even after all that, my HbA1c and fasting BG in May were non-diabetic levels. Now off Metformin, and was going to wait till next HbA1c in August, but I am wondering if I should test in the meantime.

Sorry @Molly56 this is going off topic and highjacking.
@nosher8355 I will try to continue this in a new thread tomorrow
Test, test, test, this how you find out what is going on.you are doing well, but don't let it slip, August is approx 40x 4 meals daily away, a lot of food and carbs as well. You don't need Metformin because of your results.
The finger pricking every hour, (I've been there) is to make sure your levels are good and you are not reacting to the operation, the food and your stress levels. Obviously, the tests came back good.
The only way I found out that I have my condition is by testing before and two hours after, to see what carbs and sugars were doing to me.
I hope things are improving for you. Test, test, test!

Thanks nosher

Pipp - I really am impressed by the results of the work you did in the past and, to be honest, even I might agree that your diabetic condition has been reversed, or certainly suspended. On that basis, I'm curious as to why you remained on Metformin, until recently (?).

In your shoes, I would find it very challenging not to have some sort of baseline testing regime in place. I agree that testing 50 times a week is a waste of time and money; whoever is footing the bill, but I would be considering looking at a fasting test, plus perhaps a routine of testing your carbine at meal(s) periodically. Obviously, without really knowing your eating patterns, that's tricky to totally quantify.

Personally, I might go for fasting mid-week (weekends being likely to be more relaxed and potentially better sleep), plus pre and post either a meal out, or our curry night, which includes rice for me.

Sorry to have gone off-piste @Molly56 , but there's always so much to talk about on these boards. :)

@nosher8355 and @AndBreathe
Thank you for your replies.
I have started a new thread

Do I test if I am 'post-diabetic?'

as I feel I am being bad mannered, going off topic on this one.
