To test or not!!

Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi all,

I have just moved house which involved a move from one county to another (Leics-Northamptonshire)

I was diagnosed with type 2 a couple of years ago and have been testing upto 5 times a day.
I had my first appointment with my doctor at the new surgery and he has stopped my prescription for
strips and lancets on the grounds that they are costing too much to supply anymore? He validated his
decision by asking me what I would do if I found my sugars too low? I said eat something! He told good but
considering I was on tablet medication it wasnt required for me to test.
So if I get low sugars am I to guess this is the case and just eat anyway? I do not see the logic in this decision.

What compounded this was that the diabetic nurse I saw the day before changed me from a Contour tester to a
CareSens so now I have no strips for either machine??

Great example of joined-up thinking, or not !

It's the post code lottery, I can't get any strips and haven't been able to for some years.

The doctor is right, you won't go hypo as you are controlled by diet and excercise, so they won't supply any strips to test.

You are also right, how do you keep an eye on BGs? My doctor says I don't need to, he does that with the HbA1c tests.

So welcome to the no strips club

I buy "SD Codefree" strips for £4.99 for 50 (no VAT as a diabetic) so it's not a big deal.

I once pointed out that if I just ate what I liked and finished up on insulin I would then be prescribed as many strips as I needed, "Yes" my doctor replied "But you won't do that will you?"

I have type 2 and my GP will not give me test strips of lances as he says he is following NICE guidelines as they say you do not need to test unless you feel ill, a few times i have not felt well at work and tested myself and yes i had low blood sugars if it happened at home i could not test as i have no strips or lances, so what do i do eat what i want ?,

Well he didn't validate his decision very well did he? So what about when you're too high? That's when most of the damage is being done after all. If there's another GP in the practice (there are about 6 in mine) then ask for someone else.
