Several of the papers reported today that statins increase the risk of diabetes
but there is no mention of the effect on those of us who already have it.
I have regular discussions with my GP who advises I should take them.
I have reduced my Hba1c from 7.7 when I was first diagnosed a year ago from to 6.4
by diet and activity only and my cholesterol ratio is 3.7 %. I have lost nearly 2 stone
but he is still not still not satisfied.
I refused Metformin and will take even more persuading to take statins now they say it increases
blood glucose levels and causes a weight increase. I haven't put in all this effort to have it undone
by taking pills.

No one can force you to take meds that you don't want to take, that goes without saying........

I was put on statins when I was diagnosed, but my cholesterol is now down to 3.5 so I was going to ask if I can come off it or at least reduce the dose. My brother was on Simvastatin 40mg and couldn't tolerate it at all. Seems that something is alsways hailed as the new holy grail of healthcare then shot down some years later. In yesterdays paper there was an article on what we all know here which is that high fat isn't bad for us after all

It's also printed in the info sheet in the statin tab box .. Yet when I said to my DBN .. I was told I was stupid and no it dosent :banghead:

In a study of almost all males (US veterans) They compared the increase over two years in fasting glucose of diabetics who used statins and diabetics who didn't.
After adjustments for age and other drug use they found that on average, in non statin users the FBG rose by 32mg/dl. In statin users it rose by 37mg/dl.
(so a rise of 1.7mmol/l in those who didn't take statins and 2.05mmol/l in those that did. So a small but statistically significant increase)

Here is the NHS take on todays newspaper reports (I've just skimmed it, I note that the weight increase is an average of 0.25 Kg over 4 years) Obviously you need to look at your own risks and then decide.

The article also has a link to the full paper which is open access (though looks to be one that will take a while to read)
