Hi, after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I have changed my lifestyle and way of eating for the last 3 months nearly and have managed to lose nearly a stone and a half... the other night... i don't know why but I felt I desparately needed something sweet.... I miss my odd sweet but continued to gorge half a large jar of almond brittle made by friends in Spain... I couldn't eat it quick enough... it was like some sort of fix... anyway since then..approx 36 hours ago I have had the most severe stomach cramps and bloating I thought I was going to have to go to hospital... sometimes so severe i couldn't hardly move. It did calm down for an hour or so after going to loo.... I know it was really bad to have eaten what I did and will never do it again but I just couldn't stop myself.... i wondered if it was anything to do with the diabetes... or just an intolerance to maybe the almond.... or should I say the almonds in such great quantity... i have really learnt my lesson... the pain is still quite bad but is getting slightly less in severity. Any input would be good please....

I do not know how much fibre those nuts contain, but too much nut fibre treats me the same especially when eaten with a small apple .. I'd blame the fibre everytime!

I've just had a look in a fibre count book and 7 almonds contain as much fibre as a serving of cooked porridge... no wonder you were griped!

Um. Ain't Almond Brittle made from Almonds and BUTTERSCOTCH???

Surely as a Diabetic you have to expect that much Sugar to effect you in a bad way???

Well this is the fourth day and I am still in a little pain from all the almond brittle...it's certainly something I won't do again.... unfortunately I don't feel i've had too much help re what I can and can't eat from the doctors/nurses so still finding my feet..... it's a lapse I don't think I'll be doing again.... many thanks.... :|

One Christmas I sat and ate a bowl of walnuts whilst watching tv, paid the price after and had a upset stomach for 3 days after. It would seem over-indulgence of any nut can cause irritation of the stomach, so the best advice is to eat in moderation!

Thanks Nigel..... you're right ... in moderation.... so probably approx 50 almonds covered in toffee wasn't the ideal thing.. just as well I left the last dozen in the jar. A lesson to be learned I thinks.

Thanks for that info Hobs... i never knew they contained so much fibre...

I poisoned myself by accident eating to many almonds. I was pregnant and wanted to eat a healthy snack so I sat down with a 3lb. Bag and ate 11/2 lbs in one sitting. Well I ended up in the hospital with severe stomach cramping. Got severely dehydrated from throwing up and diarrhea and started labor at 6 months pregnant. They took blood and found strychnine. They thought someone poisoned me and called poison controll. Poison controll had a good laugh when they told him how many almonds I ate and he said "well she poisoned herself eating that many. Most people only eat 10 to 15 total go tell her not to eat that many!" After they got my labor stopped and cleaned out the poison everyone had good laugh. Boy did i learn my lesson about moderation. So for everyone out there almonds are good for you but not in such large amounts.

A word of warning on eating too many nuts, especially almonds! This happened to me....almonds are notroiously high in 'oxalates' combine this with insufficient not drinking enough fluids (you become dehydrated) signicantly increases your risk to developing kidney stones.

That's why the country Turkey (IIRC) - highest consumption of Almonds - also has the highest no. of individuals developing kidney stones.
