I don't seem to be able to stop losing weight, I am now 7st 11 and still losing. I have signed up to my fitness pal, but I am not sure what to set the goals at. I am following the LCHF diet and have set my goal for carbs 48, but not sure what to set the the rest at. At the moment in order to maintain/gain weight it has automatically set goals of: Calories 2,245, Carbs 56, Fat 75, Protein 337, Sodium 2,300 and Sugar at 84. I am not sure how much fat/protein I should have. I would really struggle to eat this many calories per day without spiking my sugar levels.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've been using myfitnesspal since shortly after diagnosis, and I'm now trying to stabilise my weight. It's proving tricky, but I'm getting there. As you have found, You can set your own goals (although I haven't tried doing that for weight gain, or even tried altering for maintenance). I just use it now to keep track of what I've eaten and historically review the proportions every now and then. Have you tried working out your own base metabolic rate, or are you taking MFP's calculations as "correct", even if you feel not correct for you?

Whatever goals you have set, it will still record whatever you input, in terms of food, so I'd just interpret as you go. When you say, increasing your calories increased your bloods, have you tried focusing on increasing the fat content? For me, it's a tool, not a rule.

I feel your pain, as I don't want to become a yo-yo dieter, even on a small scale. I give myself a tolerance of +/-3kg to allow for natural fluctuations.

Hi AndBreathe, thank you very much for your reply, I am fairly new to diabetes, so still experimenting, and being in that age group where I was brought up with the 'fat is bad' way of life I am probably not eating enough fat, but I have also read somewhere that too much protein is bad for you, so again I am probably not eating enough, I will increase both of these and see how I go.

Also being on Metformin I find that it supresses my apetite and I tend to eat for the sake of it. It is really difficult to get the right balance, but if I lose any more weight I will disappear lol. My husband already calls me boney M.

Thanks again.

Fat is least likely to increase your blood scores, followed by protein, then the big daddy of carb. That's one of the reasons you will see increased fats advised on here.

I'm a similar vintage to you, at 57, and I have to steel myself to eat more fat, but needs must . It's interesting, but my OH has always eaten butter, when I might have had Flora, full fat milk, when I would have semi-skimmed, and now I've been discussing reverting both of us to full fat milk, and he says he doesn't like it any more. The "conversion" to semi-skimmed milk to a while to achieve, the reconversion could take even longer!

Life is fickle, eh?

I have switched to butter, full fat yoghurts and have several coffees with double cream, so am getting there, but just think I need more. Carbs really spike my bg even very small amounts, so don't eat anything made with flour. I am trying to convert my husband, as he has already had a stent put in about 6 years ago and still eats loads of pasta, rice, bread etc., despite me telling him it is bad for him. He was told by his cardiologist not to eat saturated fats, so I can't eat what he eats and he won't eat what I eat, so I get lots of exercise in the kitchen these days lol. So much conflicting advice out there its not surprising that we are apprehensive about going from one extreme to the other.

Take care

I am younger than you and eating in the 70s wasn't low fat so butter and all fat always has seemed more natural. Remember the cream on top of the milk in the milk bottles on doorsteps and the birds pecking the aluminum tops to drink the cream? Glad to be off the marg. and back on the butter.
