Merry Christmas!

This year I plan a brand new tradition. No diabetes on Christmas day and Boxing day. There! Job's a Goodun.

Last year for Christmas I wished that I could get good blood sugars all day. There must be a Santa Claus because I spent most of the morning in the 5's, and nothing too terrible happened to me :) I even got to eat some chocolates! Probably won't be doing that this year though, I gained like 3kg off hypo treatments which I am lowkey trying to lose (BMI is still totally fine so it's not a big deal).

We usually eat chicken for Christmas, with veggies (I skip the carby potatoes - lots of greens for me!).

My first t2d Christmas. I am currently wavering between " I will have a little bit" and "sod it I will eat the lot." Have a feeling it might be the second option. Problem is we have quite a large family and the Christmas celebrations are starting on the 16th December and finishing in new year. Bah humbug.

Back in July/August I was thinking of having the whole of Christmas week off being T2, however, I have revised it down to two days 'cos a week would be pushing it I think. Having said that, as this will be my first Crimbo since dx and the fact that my next A1c will be February-ish I do not want to see a rise. It would be great to start the new year with non diabetic numbers, fingers crossed.

I had my diagnostic blood tests on 2nd January 2014. It was just a normal routine test, no idea I was diabetic at the time, so no worries. Late November/early December we had a 2 week family holiday, then the Christmas celebrations started, then New Year (my birthday). I must have been stuffed with carbs. When they told me my diagnosis, all these celebrations before the test were my excuse for complete denial! (I have seen these same excuses reported by newbies on the forum) Two months later my HbA1c was exactly the same! It was only then that I realised the celebrations had been an excuse so I took myself in hand, got my meter, and went low carb.

And the rest is history, as they say. When I am being totally honest I know I had been 'grazing' for a couple of years before I was dx but at first I was saying 'But my diet is healthy!' Denial is certainly a biggy to get over.

I tend to have the full works with more veggies than spuds. I make a pavlova for hubby and brother in law and my sister in law and me have one of the small Christmas puds with double cream. The things I do miss are dates and dried figs which I had every Christmas even as a child. Perhaps I will try them this year - in the interest of science of course!

Fantastis pizzas, @DavidGrahamJones! I used to be rather partial to Chococo's Tawny Figs at Christmas, @Daphne917. I don't think trying one in the interest of science would work now, even though they are covered in dark chocolate?;) One of our family traditions is to play lots of board games accompanied by bowls of crisps, nuts, Japanese rice crackers, Bombay mix etc (yup, mega-carb intake). Curried coconut chips from the Keto Diet Cookbook instead? Yes, awesome! Worth trying for a crisp substitute.
