Travel as a diabetic...

KurtJames

Newbie
Dear diabetics,

I wonder if anyone can give me some information regarding travel insurance companies previously used by yourself?

I have been diagnosed diabetic last week and was due to travel at the end of this month, but I have been told I shall have to postpone my trip and also that being newly diagnosed I may find it difficult to find a company who will insure me.

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you're in the UK Moneysupermarket have as specific search engine for travel insurance with medical conditions, have a look

That's who i used too. One of the companies that came out quite competitive and offered the cover we needed was top dog insurance. Good luck.

Interestingly enough, it was my local Diabetes UK Group meeting tonight, and our speaker happened to be an Insurance Bronker, talking about travel insurance, with medical conditions, and specifically diabetes.

In reality, diabetes shouldn't impact insurance premiums. Where premiums are raise, more usually it's other things - like high blood pressure or the like that pushes premiums up.

Where you may find a challenge is how close you are to diagnosis, because your experience in dealing with it is limited to say the least. That can make insurers nervous. It would also depend on how long you were going to be a way and where you were headed.

My insurance was in place before, but they ran through the same questions that they said they would ask if it came up for renewal. They are basically trying to find out if it's given you any associated health problems or if you don't have awareness of hypos.

HSBC insurance via one of our bank accounts was fine with a T1

Thanks everyone, my diabetic nurse today mentioned a company called MIA, apparently started by medics who were fed up with people being ripped off.
