Hiya

Is a non fasting triglycerides level of 2 something to be concerned about. I know a fasting one should be below 2 . My doctor won't help me with any good cholesterol testing .

Triglycerides should ideally be under 1.7. They should always be tested whilst fasting. A non-fasting test will show higher levels simply because your body produces them in response to food - fatty foods especially, so during digestion they are busy swimming round in your blood stream doing their job - which is carrying away fat.. The more fat you have eaten before the test, the higher your trigs will be. Even if the doctor says no need to fast, it is best to ignore him and fast anyway. I do.

I've only had one round of lipid tests with my current surgery since I moved in the summer. Total cholesterol 4.7, and TC/HDL 2.8 (or 4.8 and 2.7, can't remember). Triglycerides.... well, nobody knows, because they only report them if total cholesterol is over 6.

So - what is one of the most helpful indicators of cardiac risk, my surgery is not reporting. Dumb, eh?

Well, I've never heard that one before! I assume it is the lab that won't report them, but they must know them, so why not report them! Seems crazy to me.

However, if you know the total, the HDL and LDL you can calculate the trigs yourself.

Hi
This chart is courtesy of Professor Sikaris.

He says that the harmful LDLs are the small dense LDL, particularly when they have become glycated and oxidised. The phenotype B line on the chart is small dense LDL, and as you can see, if the trigs are less than 1.0, you have little to worry about.
For that reason, my target is 1.0. Obviously @bluetit1802 's figure of 0.5 is perfect!

Oh dear so 2 ain't good ... will update when I get my full lipid test fasting as I've decided just to go private for it £100 well spent to let me know where I stand

Your 2 was after a non-fasting test, so was probably fine. However, take the private test if it will help you relax about it.

Unfortunately I didn't write the LDL down. Never mind, there's always next year.

It's super crazy, really, since the trigs are directly measured and the LDL is calculated, AIUI.

I fully understand, and feel the same myself. I still have 6 monthly blood checks at my surgery, including full lipids. I know that from next year I will be moved to annual ones. This doesn't bother me at all as far as the HbA1c is concerned because I test regularly and wear a Libre sensor, so I know how my BS are doing. I am, however, concerned I will miss out on the cholesterol/lipids, which is more important to me. So I do understand. (even though my cholesterol and lipids are excellent! I want to know they are staying that way.)
