Hi everyone

I have just joined this today. I have been diabetic for 20 years and this moment in time I am really resenting it

No matter what I do my levels never seem to be stable resulting me to having up to 8 injections a day I can't cope with it all

Any advice or tips would be most welcome

Hi @Chanz111, and welcome.

I've also been diabetic for 20 years...It's a constant battle, but you can definitely fight a good fight, and live a relatively 'normal' life.

Would help the guys here to give you more directed advice/opinions if you shared a little more info, e.g.
  • Are your issues recent, or have you always had difficulties?
  • What are your last couple of HBA1Cs
  • Do you test frequently, if so what kind of results do you typically have for morning, before meals, before bed
  • You say you're on 8 injections a day, are any of these correction doses?
  • Have you tried to change your diet? If so, did this help?
  • etc

It's just been over the past year since having to have laser eye surgery due to having high sugars in the past ..

So I'm on nova rapid so I take that basically when I eat to try keep my levels down I have recently started testing again and I always seem to be really high in the morning like 14 even tho I take my slow realising insulin before I go to bed my sugars rapidly drop around dinner time it's just a constant battle trying to get it right I feel like no matter what I do nothing seems to fix it

has no-one mentioned a pump to you?

also ssems that your insulin intake may need ajusting

First and foremost do some basal testing @Chanz111, if your basal dose is out then this may explain why your having to do so many correction doses.

Hi Chanel

Do you count carbs? After you've got your basal sorted, that's the best thing to get better control.

If you were abLe to put a typical day - what you eat, your injections, your blood sugars - that might be a good snapshot so that people could make more suggestions.

I would recommend tracking your results on your phone - this is a good way to spot patterns and to then see where the difficulties lie - I use Diaconnect religiously now, it tracks my carb intake, insulin doses, exercise, other things too like periods as these affect my doses, but helps me when I need support from my DSN as I can then email them to her and adjust my ratios when necessary.

Don't let it get you down - you are amongst many people here who know exactly what it's like so share you worries with us

It's sometimes difficult to control for no reason whatsoever. I'm really struggling this week after having a great week last week (Im on a libre sensor so can track my BG constantly). Nothing has changed, I'll just write it off and start again. A few years ago I went through the same initial high in the morning and that was the start of a daily fight to bring my levels down. In the end, after constant nagging from my diabetic nurse I gave in and went on a pump. Thats the best thing I've done. Seek help if its available, you don't have to fight this on your own, we have a brilliant health service in this country with a lot of dedicated people working in it.

Hope you get things sorted quickly. It's sometimes hard to get out of a downward spiral but as others have said, at least you can come on here and find lots of others who have gone through the same thing.

Hi, I have been type 1 for 4 years now and I learnt to count carbs and it really works. You just need to know how many grams of cars you are eating then understand your ratio I.e I am 1/1 which means 1 unit for every 10 g and this has an effect of 2mmols. You might be different that's why you need to record your intake and results for a week then you can get the best advice. After all this time your body will build up resistance no doubt so you will need to increase the dose.
Remember, 4 hours after fast acting dose you will know the impact.
