Hi there,
My partner and I have been trying for a baby since December, which I know is not a long time, but I can't help but shake the feeling that its not happening because of my diabetes. I've been diabetes for 15 years, with waives of good and bad control throughout. My HB1C is 7.8 and I know 7 or below is ideal for having babies. I'm aiming to get it there in the weeks ahead. I guess I'm just looking for advise on what's best to do while trying, and reassurance that not everything that happens to me over the years health wise must always fall back on being diabetic, as most GP's seem to think!!
Any happy stories to share to keep
me optimistic or advise would be much appreciated!! Thanks!!

Hi, it took me 18 months to get pregnant, I was told by my care team that the length of time it takes is nothing to do with diabetes, the most important thing is the blood sugar control in the few months before pregnancy and then obviously all the way through. The hardest bit is maintaining low (as well as stable, not eratic) control leading up to being pregnant as this is something with no timescale. But it is really really important. My advice is to keep as controlled as possible, take some exercise to help control your levels and don't get disheartened - it's worth it in the end. Once born, my baby had to go in to special care as her blood sugar had been slightly raised whilst inside me and then it dropped to 'normal' when she was born so it was like having a hypo for her. It was only for a few days but you need to be prepared! Louise

we tried for years. T1 husband was diabetic then, I wasn't. We ended up adopting and it never happened for us in any other way. our 1 daughter has been a source of great pride to us.
I know all the distress of wanting to be pregnant. I don't know what determines you will or won't, but diabetes alone probably isn't it.
Make sure you are as healthy as you can be. and it either will or won't happen.

Hi Moany.

The couple who's house we bought had been trying for 11 years ...
The very week they moved house - yep she found out she was pregnant .
Gave birth the next june to a beautiful little girl .

She admitted with the house move she hadnt gave getting pregnant a single thought .
Yet had TRIED everything to concieve all those years !
She was a type1 as I recall .

Bet you have heard the just relax and let nature take its course thingy .
Many times over and over again .
She had too but realised she never really applied it, as was always over wishing and over hoping
for things to happen.

Then the day [week she moved house] she stopped stressing or worrying over it - it finally 'did' happened :)

Anna.

Hi Moaney

I have had type 1 for over 20 years and have had 3 children all concieved normally 1st pregnancy took 6 months, 2nd 4 months and 3rd was a surprise (not planned) I had times when i was younger where i never really took care of my diabetes, but it will happen usually when you try to hard it won't happen as you are getting stressed about it. Try to act normal as if you was'nt trying for a baby. When the time is right it will happen just controll your diabetes and keep your sugar levels on track.

good luck

I don't think it affects fertility, but your blood sugar control in the very early days of pregnancy can affect how the baby develops and therefore you may be more likely to miscarry if your blood sugar is not optimal.
Having said that I conceived (accidentally) with a hba1c of nearly 10 and my baby was, thankfully, fine.
It can take a while to fall pregnant, four months is not long at all, but if you take more than a year there may be other factors at play that need checking out.
Good luck

Hi Moaney

Dont despair, You have only been trying for a short period of time. Dont be hard on yourself. Your HB1C is pretty good so Just relax and have some Reflexology sessions. I achieved pregnancy after regular weekly Reflexology sessions and after 14 years of infertility achieved pregnancy. Thats what prompted me to train as a Reflexologist myself. Your glucose levels arent that high and therefore it shouldnt hinder you. Dont worry and dont stress yourself.

Looking forward to your message when you fall pregnant.. I have a feeling that you will soon...

Good Luck
