Hi guys, my name is Yulia, I'm a type 1 diabetic for 22 years (I'm 25). I want to start a low carbs diet, so I would be happy to recieve some advice on how to start. I eat a lot of carbs and depend on them. How can I make the transition? I've downloaded this carbs calculator: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ephi.carbocalculator to help me control the amount of carbs I eat. What should I do next?
Thanks.

Hi Yulia

For a type 1, it's probably better to reduce your carbs in steps, so that you can get used to adjusting insulin. Maybe start out by trying 150-180g cerbs a day to see how you get on. This will also give you some time to get used to adapting meals to lower carb versions. Then when you're ready, drop down to 120g/day and so on. I use myfitnesspal to work out my carbs, protein and fat amounts.

Hi Yulia, you've made a good start by joining here, it's helped me enormously over the last month. I knew nothing about low carb diets but am quite enjoying it now, lots of new foods to be discovered!
Two books that are usually recommended really are helpful, Eat Fat by Dr Trudi Deakin and Carbs & Cals, both available from here http://www.xperthealth.org.uk/shop
And of course reading the forums and asking lots of questions, everyone here is so helpful :)

Hi and welcome!

I would agree with @robert72 that the trick will be to make the transition slowly, carefully adjusting insulin at each step.

For general hints and tips we've had some great threads on this subject, over the last couple of years. If you have a look through the low carb section of the forum, you will find it a mine of information.
