Trying to turn things around

Pleased for you that the op went well and you are home again. Take it gently, from what I remember of the one time I had a general anaesthetic it took several days after I got home for the effects to wear off and I was constantly trying to do more than I could. Frustrating but patience is the only answer. A couple of weeks off work is a good idea, possibly even a phased return to make sure you do not try to do too much and set yourself back to the beginning.

Thanks. Taking it very easy. Have hobbies that don't require much physical exertion but will keep the brain active. Crciket on today as well, so going to listen to Test Match Special, and there's some football on the TV tonight.

Careful with the stress levels lol :)

Well, the roller-coaster ride continues.

I was re-admitted to hospital the day following the operation due to concerns about the amount of fluid which had drained in the following 24 hours - district nurse came to remove pressure dressings and was rather surprised about the amount of fluid in my drainage bottle, rang the hospital and they asked me to go to the ambulatory care unit for assessment. Saw one of the surgeons and he said that whilst the amount that had drained wasn't unusual they wanted to keep me in overnight for observation.

Next morning very little more had drained so I was sent home with another referal to the district nurse for the drain to be removed when it was draining less than 20ml in 24 hours. That finally came out on Tuesday this week and the bandages from the surgery were removed at the same time.

Then the wound from the surgery started bleeding and wouldn't stop. District nurse came back out again on Wednesday, redressed it and said I should make appointments to see practice nurses going forward. Did that and went to see them yesterday morning only for them to refer me back to the hospital. So spent most of yesterday in ambulatory care again. Did all their checks and told me everything was fine and sent me on my way with gauze and dressings. Hadn't been told that the wound would bleed so much but reassured everythings ok and back to seeing the practice nurses again for them to monitor things.

BGs remarkably stable through all this, though did overeat a bit yesterday evening and was a bit high (8.8) first thing this morning.

Lovely day here so going to take a gentle stroll down to see the practice nurse.

Good luck David, you always seem so cheery and positive, I bet the District nurses love you. x

Thanks, but it takes time and effort ... and sometimes a bit of distance!

I can get in a tizz very quickly, especially when I haven't been told about something and/or somebody hasn't taken the time to explain things to me - one of my bugbears with the medical profession is sometimes how you're just left to get on with things and work it all out yourself. Ok, I was expecting that there'd be a level of wound care after the operation, but nobody had said anything to me about how much the wound might bleed after they'd taken the bandages off so on Wednesday and again yesterday I was getting quite concerned and if I'd posted then I'd have sounded like a jibbering wreck!

The district nurses and the practice nurses have been wonderful throughout by the way - my ire is reserved for those higher up the ladder!

Gosh - You've been in the wars.

I appreciate what you mean about warnings. I had a variation on your issue, with a post-op haematoma a couple of years ago. My body was repeatedly shovelling out blood clots the size of an egg, a couple of times a day, but when I saw the nurse I was told that was fine, but if the clots were the size of my fist to be concerned. Bearing in my chest measures a mahoosive 32", you can imagine my boobies aren't that big.

I enquired if I should have been given more information, to be told the post op info covered t in the required detail, and the level of concerning post-op issues of that sort were so few and far between, it wasn't deemed necessary.

For some weeks that aftermath of my morning shower looked like a scene from psycho.

I hope the worst is now passed for you, and to put a positive spin on things, at least your HCPs are erring on the side of caution, by continually referring you back to the hospital.

Keep chillaxing, and at least you may have a decent cricket match this week, as last week's was a bit of a let down for the English fans.

Chillaxing weekend coming right up - slept until 8.30 and don't have to be anywhere or do anything until Tuesday! Plenty of sport on the TV this weekend and some good books and music to hand.

For me, simply handing somebody some information for them to read isn't good enough - they need to take time to explain things that might happen otherwise you end up with people worrying unduly and then taking up more of the NHS's time.

Going to have the music from the shower scene in Pyscho in my head for the rest of the day now:)

The rollercoaster ride continues!

Wound from op still not fully healed and might be tracking to the sinus again, but now down to seeing the practice nurses every other day for dressing changes rather than every day. Back to see the consultant early November so not too long to wait.

Morning levels are all over the place at the moment - the last few weeks they've been anything between 4.3 and 9.6 - bit stressed and not sleeping well - but daytime levels have been good - between 4 and 6 most of the time.

Still intermittant fasting - one meal a day most days with the occasional extended fast - and doing a lot of walking - and weight is now down under 15 and a half stone, so that's over four and a half stone gone in just over a year.

Wow @david1968 that fantastic loss. Off to see dietician in diabetic Unit to be weighed... Dun dun dun!!
If 133.00 or less I'm on for op. I'm weighing myself in as 133.40 thou.
I know you no longer use insulin but I'm on 300 basal and 75 bolus units. I was on 72 more units of basal and 30more bolus daily a few weeks back. Dapagliflozin and low cals with low carb now.
Ive lost 2.5kgs since last Friday (10days).

Thanks Vicky. Fingers crossed your scales are on the high side and you get the go ahead for the op. Sounds like your're making good progress as well - keep going!

Thanks. Not had it so bad when compared to others. Try to stay positive but difficult sometimes - either use distraction techniques or go into the cave, think things through and come out fighting!
