I would just like to publicly pledge that from today I am going to take diabetes seriously again, I am going to stop being in denial and I am going to put in a lot more effort to make sure I control the diabetes rather than it controlling me.

I have had a sh** week personally and emotionally. I constantly think about chocolate, talk about chocolate and eat chocolate. I keep telling myself that it is my only comfort/pleasure as I don't smoke or drink. In reality it is doing me more harm than good.

My FBG level this morning was 9.2 and that's when I decided enough is enough and I have to do something constructive and be more positive.

If I make a public promise then surely it will be harder to break it...........

Thank you to all those who have supported and encouraged me. I owe it to you all to keep this promise.

Glad to hear it, you are only fooling yourself if you carry on ignoring that you have diabetes. I know it is hard, believe me even those who have good control found it hard doing a lifestyle change in the beginning.
Watch the programme that was on ITV last night and you will see that chocolate is not addictive. If you have a bad day then do something other than eating the wrong things. Take yourself for a walk, tidy out a cupboard, clean windows and mutter under your breath, rant and rave here as much as you like.

You could still have a few choccie treats once in a while though. If you go cold turkey you'll just end up giving in and bingeing.

I LOVED my cakes before my db and found it difficult cutting these out, but now I just make low carb alternatives like chocolate cheesecake, and sponge cakes with cream cheese icing and single cream. :D

I really missed my bread too, but now I bake my own using almond flour. I think looking for 'alternative' treats is quite important, otherwise you do feel like you're missing out and end up getting angry and frustrated. When I'm feeling like that or I've had a bad day, or it's 'that time of the month' (sorry if that's too much info), that's when I'll treat myself to a low carb cake.

I've never been a big choccie fan, but you could try the dark stuff, I swore I'd never eat dark chocolate, (when I did used to eat it, it was always milk choc), but it does grow on you, and Sainsbury's do a dark choc that's divided into individual bars, which is only around 4-5g of carbs per bar, or Lindt do a much nicer tasting dark choc, two squares is only 4gs.

With a bit of ferreting around on this website and trying a few recipes you'll still get your sweet fix without uping you BG levels

You know you can do it, any help we're here coz we know you'd help us. Keep us updated!

You have pets choco?

Don't know if its a practicable idea for you but a puppy or a kitten will soon take your mind off the evil stuff and of course with a dog you get the added benefit of having to take it walkies.

When I posted an HBA1C of 10 in November I had a long chat with my DB specialist. She's a Celiac, so knows a bit about having to cut things out of her diet. She suggested I think a bit like an alcoholic - it doesn't help me to have the odd biscuit or cake. I used to smoke, but I wouldn't dream of having the occasional fag.

It is rubbish that we're diabetic and I will probably never eat a cream tea again and just the finality of that can hit you like a train sometimes. But there's tons of things I can eat and there are lots of people far worse off.

Well done for wanting to get to grips with your DB - I took a similar decision a couple of months ago and I'm encouraging myself with the weight loss, an improvement in my physique (yes I am that vain) and the knowledge that I might have a longer and healthier life with my wife without going blind or my feet falling off.

(rant over - sorry)

Best of luck..
S

Good for you

It looks like we are on the same journey

Good luck and wishing you well! :)

You can do it Choc. We'll have a brain-storming session on Sunday and see if we can come up with some strategies :)

Hi .
Keep strong and positive , you can 'do' this.... :D
We're here for you . x
Anna.

Thank you all so much for all your comments and your support.

It's been really, really difficult tonight. I have no chocolate in the house and resisted temptation to go and buy some.
I did have a wee moser roth bar at lunchtime so I haven't exactly gone without, although it feels like it :(

Tomorrow is another day........

Good for you Choco, i hope you can keep up the good work.
I too used to like all the chocy bars, snickers, mars bars and easter eggs, especially creme eggs [and crisps, o hell, i want crisps] but i decided its either me or them and i chose me.
I suppose its a type of mindset you need to get into combined with some strong willpower. I havnt had a single choc since being diagnosed in July and only a few crisps and actually i dont miss the chocs but still have a craving for crisps and if i think i am weakening [a trip to the supermarket] i just remind my self that i must consider my health and that its important to keep my blood sugars down and if i do eat the stuff i will pay for it in the end. I will admit, sometimes its hard but you do get used to it.
Other members of this forum have made me think that trips to the supermarket and local foodstore are a challenge that i now quite like as i search for interesting things that i can eat and ime usually successful. For example, i found recently that Sainsburys do a gluten free real sausage. Took some finding, tucked away in their frozen section but it saves me a seperate trip into Tun Wells fighting the traffic and finding somewhere to park.
So Choco, dont give up, get on the forum if you feel overwhelmed, and chat to people and hopefully that will help. I am lucky i suppose, ive a lot of hobbies, moths, fishing, my BXs and of course my dogs and ime well aware that chocolate is poisonous to them, another reason not to have any in the house.
Good luck and keep the faith, ime sure you will win in the end.

Chocolate is the answer, who cares what the question is

Unless the question is "Why am I going to end up blind and shuffling around in my old age?".

Chocolate is nice but I'd just cross it off my list of things I can have and be done with it, if I were you. Love yourself more than silly sweets and concentrate on being as healthy as you can... You are worth it!

I wish you success 'chocoholicnomore'. :)

I've never had a problem with choc, but I do understand how you feel, as my weaknesses are take aways, especially Chinese, and cakes - all descriptions of them, so they're banned from the house now. It's the only way I can cope with it.

I'm with you, Marina . . . I need to get a grip on myself, too - too much wine since Christmas, never mind the carbs - so let's support each other through this.

Good luck and stay strong!

After reading all I have discovered my attitude stinks where it comes to food. I still eat anything and everything i want in fact I've just finished a big bar of Areo. (naughty but OH.... Ever so nice)I kept thinking what do i take tablets for if not to control my sugars. My tablets work well for me so i'd been pretty much care free. I really am my own worst enemy because since december 12th i haven't been able to move much coz of gallstones and pancreatitus. So i have been eating rubbish and not being able to excersise. The weight has been pileing on. I have now been given my OP date 29th of feb and have vowed to myself that things are seriously going to have change. Last month i reminded my DN i need to see the dietician as i still dont know how to read the carbs properly or how much per meal. I have to be honest now if I'm to do this properly. I have been to embarrased to ask anyone hear for help as i am slow in taking in information  . I think i go into like a panic mode and what people are trying to tell me gets all jumbled up. It feels like I'm taking a test and scared of getting it wrong so i end up saying sod it and ignore everything. Is there anyone out there patient enough to teach me please. Sorry to ask it's just my DN doesn't seem to have either the knowledge or time to help.

Every single member of this forum is patient enough to help you and teach you.

I started this thread as I am really struggling with food at the moment. And there have been a few other threads started by people who are struggling. You are definitely not alone and we are all here to help each other.

Personally, I can't give much advice at the moment as I haven't been able to overcome my problems yet. What I can advise you though is to come onto this forum every day/night and post about your achievements or problems. Being praised for your achievements helps to spur you on and, if you are having problems, there is always someone with great advice, help, knowledge and support.

No question is stupid and we all get it wrong at some point so don't be embarassed. Anyway, everybody learns from their mistakes.

Why don't you print off Viv's modified atkins diet from the thread and read it over and over again and take as long as you like to digest it (excuse the pun  ). You don't need to count much to start with. If you are having problems with the food labels then just ask. Basically you need to count the total carbs in anything you eat.

Good luck and keep us updated on how you are doing.

I actually bought an atkins diet book in december. It gave me ideas but as for the counting of things, it just to difficult so i never bothered. If it was calorie counting I'd be fine but not with the carb. EXAMPLE. I'm eating peanuts at the minute in a crunchy shell. It reads PER 100G =43.1G / OF WHICH IS SUGARS 8.1G . Which one do i take notice of? Do you know how many carbs we can have per meal or day?
