Good morning this morning I got up at 3am felt good just wanted to get up and make my Bonus of a day last longer,I was fast asleep by 10pm last night is 5 hours sleep enough hours for a FBG as my first test read 5.3 just to see I took another reading at 3 15am 15 minutes later and it read 4.7 bit of a mystery to me ,would appreciate your input, thank you:)

For a start meters aren't 100% accurate. Even if you test the same drop of blood twice one after another, or blood from different hands or different figures they can give different readings.
I remember reading something about one doctor (Jason Fung?) who was researching Dawn Phenomenon, and iirc he said fasting blood test should be taken 10 hours after last meal, but I don't think any of us does that.
10 hours is the time you are supposed to fast before a fasting blood test at GP surgery or hospital.

First of all I would like to say I like your phrase, "Bonus of a day". I agree that test strips and meters can give inconsistent results. It's not a question of how much sleep you have had, it's a question of how long it is since you ate or drank anything but water.

Dawn Phenomena is a bit of a misnomer since your liver will supply sugar to your bloodstream if you don't eat for extended periods and will happen anytime you haven't eaten, even during the day. For this reason I never put much faith in fasting readings, especially the official one where the surgery appointment might be any number of hours after you get up let alone an unpredictable number of hours since you last ate.

So what with the variation of testing equipment and possible intervention from your liver I should stop worrying about the relatively small variation in readings that you got.
